Basketball: UCLA hires Alford as coach

UCLA has hired New Mexico’s Steve Alford as its next coach.

Alford, the former star guard for Bob Knight at Indiana, won 155 games in his six seasons at New Mexico.

Here’s the official UCLA news release.

Look for ucla to make a push for aaron gordon.

New mexico was in gordons list before the final cut. His brother left ucla i think to play gor alford at new mexico.

  • ConcordBear

    How old is Alford?
Be interesting to see if he can adapt to the PAC and the admission standards of a school almost on par with Cal. New Mexco is a different animal academics wise and the pressure cooker of ucla hoops is intense
    Go Bears!

Reasonable hire. Experience on many levels as player and coach. With better talent he could make some noise. That said, it’s UCLA. He might be done in 2-3 years because they think they should make the final 4 every year and can win another 10 NCAA titles.

  • Juancho

I just tLked to my buddy who is a ucla alumni. Hes pissed by this hire. His take was ucla was turned down by butlers coach who wss their first choice but they settled for this guy.

  • covinared

Concord: how do you know ucla has lower admission standards for bball than Cal.

  • Will

Concord never said that UCLA’s admissions standards are lower…I think he was saying UCLA & Cal are in a different class than New Mexico for admissions standards. However, he does state that UCLA is ALMOST on par with Cal overall, as a school. The fact that Cal is slightly better is a truism 😉

Our Bear’s 60 points against cuse D sure looks very strong now.

If I were s smarts or b steven’s agent – or any other hot-in-demand coach – I’d tell the don’t even think about the ucla job.

howland’s style was a little boring but c’mon. How do you fire a coach after a 25 win season and co pac 12 champion?

  • milo

You fire a 25 win team and conference co-champ because you think you should win the whole damn thing every 3-4 years. UCLA still think they should put up the banners like Wooden. In a way that’s a big anchor.

  • covinared

Will you are right. Sorry for the unmerited challenge Concord.

  • Calfan1

Congrats to Lady Bears on reaching Elite 8!

BTW – not starting anything here but just a sincere question:
Everyone who’s criticized Sandy B – how about the lindsay Gottlieb hire?

  • ConcordBear

Congrats to the lady Bears. Fine victory tonight. A final 4 would be even sweeter.
Sandy B is solid but still waiting for our football and men’s basketball team to finish top 15 or 10 in country.
If we can do that under her watch she will get all the props she ever wanted.
Until then she has a lot to prove in my eye
    Go Bears!

So far it seems like a good hire.

Barbour has done some good and some bad. Im a baseball guy so im biased. Ill never like her. But i will give her credit. This hire and the monty hire were good.

  • SteveNTexas

Alford will be fine- He cares about academics as Bobby Knight for all his faults was especially strict about school. He will run a clean program as well and had New Mexico ranked much of the season.

  • Gobears49

I agree with Juancho about Barbour. I didn’t like how she handled the baseball issue, a sport she didn’t seem to care at all about in the beginning and seemed in a hurry to get rid of it. I’ve discussed the Tosh-gate issue ad nauseum, though some have told me that nothing could have been done to keep him. I’m not so sure about that.

I’ve consistently said Monty was a great hire by Barbour and it looks like Gottlieb was as well.
