Basketball: Pac-12 ref boss offered officials incentives to deliver “T” or eject Arizona’s Miller

This one sounds like an April Fools Day joke, but it’s not.

The Arizona Daily Star is reporting that Pac-12 director of officials Ed Rush offered his referee crew “inappropriate incentives” if they gave Arizona coach Sean Miller a technical foul or ejected him from a Pac-12 tournament game.

CBSSports.com originally reported the story and the Pac-12 office confirmed the essense of the report today in a statement.

Rush is saying he made the remark as a joke, but Miller received a technical one day later in the Pac-12 tournament semifinals.

Here’s the story from the Daily Star.

Disturbing on a few levels. One, as head of officials for a major college conference, how do you NOT fire this guy for making this remark? Two, who told the PAC 12 and what was their level of involvement? Third, is Larry Scott insane? You are going to let this pass without letting this clown go? I would hate to have this crew or this particular official officiating any of Cal’s games again, much less, against the Wildcats of Arizona. The pendulum is going to sway so far the other way that Miller will be able to do the unthinkable and will not get T’d. The coaches and the universities of this conference should push the issue. This guy has to go. You taint this aspect of the game that is already questioned by many and the next thing you know, we are at the NBA level or below that. Speak up Monty. Let’s get rid of this entire cast of clowns.

The Pac-12 refs have been complete buffoons for years. Now is the excuse to clean the whole freakin house.

+1000. Get rid of these clowns. They are killing the league. The games are terrible to watch and players don’t want to play games with these jackasses making inconsistent calls.

congrats to Lady Bears on the final 4 appearance!
first for me men or women since I’ve been a Cal Fan!

btw – usc MBB makes a splash by hiring dunk city coach.

This strengthens the argument that Pac 12 refs are not incompetent, as I hoped for years. They are dirty.

Great. More fuel for the conspiracy theorists who are convinced that entire officiating crews must be on the take.

One would think that, to avoid future events where the objectivity of the refs is not called into question, the Pac – 12 office would slap Ed Rush with some sort of penalty, even if it is not severe. They need to send a message that these types of comments, even if they were intended as a joke, will not occur again, to make what the refs and their direct boss does be as credible as possible. But that action would make too much sense.

sure seems like an offense worthy of dismal to me.

be very interesting to see how the pac 12 powers=that-be deal w it.
