The new Cal Bear logo: Your thoughts?

By Jeff Faraudo

I want to know what Cal fans think about all the changes announced today, but especially your thoughts on the new Bear logo.

Too angry?

Too scary?

Or just right?

Cal's new, more ferocious Bear logo times 3

I don’t mind the new bear “logo” that’s really a secondary logo to the cursive Cal. It’s much like the Golden Bears you see around the State Fair grounds.

That said, I don’t really care for the version on the shoulder of the football unis. Too Oregon wings for me.

Otherwise, my first viewing of the sets gave me an, “OK, they didn’t screw anything up” feeling. I want to see them on the field in action before I’ll really know how much I like them, but I’m definitely glad they have limited the number of variations.

The white unis I like very much, in theory, but they may look too Penn State(ish) when out there.

YUCK! Its horrible -it looks lost

  • kasaja

it either looks like Yogi the Bear or a member from the Planet of the Apes?

  • Rollonubears

From a distance, the top of the snout looks like two bushy old man eye brows. From close up, it looks like the bear is crying. Overall, I’m cool with it. To me, the uniforms look the same. All of this hype for gunmetal helmets? Those are so 2010. I don’t care if we wear fluorescent yellow, just win baby.

  • H8sRed

    Love it.

  • Gobears49

Where’s the teeth? Clearly not ferocious enough.

  • Juancho

    Is that bear vegan?

  • Bobsac

New bear looks befuddled. Early stage dementia?

  • DaveintheHills

    really like it personally.

in the end, this has to appeal to the kids born in the late 90s that we’re currently recruiting.

  • The Wisdom Cow

Dave, what concerns me whenever someone uses the “what matters is the kids like it” argument, is that non-”kids” almost always have what’s cool wrong.

I’m really not liking the Bear on the shoulders, more each time I see it.

What they really needed to do – you know how the QB’s shoulder inevitably gets yanked over his shoulder pad once or twice a game? They should have done MAD back page art, so the Bear turns into Oski giving the finger whever the QB’s uni gets folded over the shoulder pad.

  • Suttree

I like them, don’t think they hit a home run. Certainly didn’t scre anything up though. The bigger piece to me is rebranding across all sports. That is a solid step forward.

  • Sean

In and of itself, it’s OK. But when compared to Oski…well, one of them has to go….

  • rob bear

Definitely needs fangs with eyes wide open as if on the attack and with the words “With Extreme Prejudice,” under its paws. GO BEARS!

  • GC

    I like it, period…

  • ConcordBear

    I like the new uniforms.
The grey will look good on the road, like that we can go white on white, grey on grey but also grey tops blue pants and white tops gold pants. Great that home will mostly be blue top gold pants and only break out gold tops for special occasions and gold outs. Do like the gold tops blue pants. We have won some big games with that combo.
    Overall very solid.
Now, Cal needs to market this stuff well and win on gamedays!

  • Larry

I don’t care either way. The bear logo is fine, it just doesn’t scream “CAL” to me. It says Montana State or Wyoming if their mascots were bears.

As for the uniforms, they look about the same to me from last year. The only thing that seems off are the matte helmets. It will take some getting used to not seeing the glossy helmets.

    Overall, they are alright.

  • The Wisdom Cow

Only this morning did I notice the font used to spell “CALIFORNIA” on the basketball jerseys. Plain stupid. To do anything other than the block letters found, oh, I don’t know, ABOVE THE CAMPUS!, is just idiotic. This font, as a brand, is rather tragic.

  • Brian

Until they start winning games (or fans turn their attention to the real sport — rugby –) I could not care less about the logo.
