Rugby: Bears roar into national finals

No surprise here. Cal’s unbeaten (21-0) and top-ranked rugby 15s team blasted Navy 74-6 at Witter Rugby Field to advance to the finals of the Varsity Cup National Championships.

The Bears will meet BYU next Saturday at Provo, Utah for the Varsity Cup crown.

Navy (9-2) trailed just 12-6 in the semifinal match when the Bears used a 62-0 run to turn the game into a rout.

“We know what they do, but we weren’t prepared for them to do it quite as
well as they did,” said Navy head coach Mike Flanagan.

I was there at Witter Field- great match in the early going, until Cal pretty much overwhelmed Navy with their offensive attack. Did anyone watch it on the Pac 12 network? I was looking for TV cameras but only saw one in that elevated tower thing they built next to the pitch. Just wondered how the coverage was?

It will be a true test to best BYU on their home turf. If Cal wins convincingly, perhaps they can make a claim to be the greatest Cal rugby team in history. I’d love to read an article from Jeff on that subject, perhaps with several quoted comments from Cal rugby experts.

I watched on the Pac 12 network (internet only). Coverage was fine (to good) but due to technical limitations, the actual “footage” was very choppy and the voices lagged behind the images. But IT”S A START!

Sorry to hear about the poor video feed quality Brian. I have watched college rugby via the internet where the video and audio quality were both pretty good. Maybe the Pac 12 needs to take some lessons on how to do it right.
