Basketball: Haas Pavilion floor gets facelift

Cal has put down a new floor design at Haas Pavilion, featuring the newest “Bear” logo at mid-court.

“We are excited about the new floor at Haas Pavilion,” athletic director Sandy Barbour said. “The design enables us to increase exposure of our new visual identity while still maximizing exposure for the traditional Cal script. All of our visual identity elements are important brand assets and we believe this floor maximizes each of them.”

http://www.calbears.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/060313aaa.html “The Cal script was moved from midcourt to inside the 3-point arcs to enhance its exposure. Because fans spend the majority of basketball games focused on either half of the court, the script will be seen more often by fans in person and on television.”

OK. I actually buy this, at least for the television audience.

This is for the kids. I hated it. Then my baseball kids LOVED IT. And i accepted it.

Yeah. Well, kids like a lot of stupid crap and grow up to appreciate things they panned in their youth.

The giant bear logo is pretty bad (why not go horizontal so they could go even bigger?). It’s like Nike is trying to make other courts worse so the Oregon mistake (when on TV, it may be cool in person) doesn’t look as bad.

I should say I like the move of the Cal scripts, which does also make for better marketting. Doesn’t make up for turning 1/3 of the court (center court) into the new logo.

Not thrilled but I’ll reserve judgement until I see it in person. I didn’t like the Oregon trees on TV until I saw them in person and now they don’t bother me on TV.

I say if you make the shot while standing on the Bear, it should be a 4-pointer. Damn that thing is huge.

    Were those low-VOC coatings?

Meh. Not great, not bad. Certainly nowhere near the Oregon atrocity. If recruits love it I’m in.
