Football: Oregon gets off easy with NCAA

The NCAA hit Oregon with three years probation Wednesday, and took away one scholarship for infractions that stemmed from paying a Houston-based scouting service $25,000.

Former Ducks coach Chip Kelley was given an 18-month “show cause” order, meaning that another school cannot easily hire the man now working as head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles.

What the NCAA did not do was slap the Ducks with a bowl ban, despite determining that Kelly and the university failed to properly monitor the program.

Inside the offices of the Oregon athletic department this morning, there is no doubt quiet celebration. This couldn’t have gone much better for the Ducks.

Here’s more on the story.

The reported $300k spend on lawyers was money well spent. They can thank uncle Phil.

  • The Wisdom Cow

In Phil Knight they trust . . .

Between the VRA news yesterday and the “public reprimand” for Oregon today, I’m torn between suicide and mass homicidal rampage.

  • BlakeStreetBear

But prop 8 and DOMA were repealed, so good news there.

  • The Wisdom Cow

Don’t kid yourself, though, BSB. DOMA was a substantial win, but they punted on Prop 8. It’s a win, but not a holding for equality. The door is still open for a complete reversal of field if a socially conservative majority were to take over the court. I still can’t believe DOMA had 4 dissenters (my comp hasn’t been able to load the opinion – I’m dying to see how hollow their dissent argument is).

  • kotempman

Brothers, at risk of being hated I must express myself at this point…. this is a sad day for America as we condone same sex marriage and condone abortion to innocent babies…if you are offended by my remarks so be it I’m very sorry that the world is slowly rejecting God and the Bible…our founding fathers went into a prayer room to seek God’s will in complicated matters and now we are reaping what America has sowed with our turning our backs on God…I’m sorry…for this blog….. but I must stand for what God has clearly shown in His Word…Go Bears!!!!!!

  • The Wisdom Cow

The most influential of the founding father’s were athiests. Separation of church and state, hello?

I don’t hate you, but damn. I know more homosexuals that are far better Christians (and parents), kind, compassionate, and non-judgemental, than most hetero-Christians. Wake up.

Abortion is a different animal, but even there the hypocrisy is extraordinary. Once born, who gives a crap about them anymore? What if they’re Mexican? Or worse, poor? How about worrying about feeding and educating the kids that are alive, eh?

Wisdom Cow and Blake Street: No one gives a shit about what you two think about DOMA and Prop 8, and most of us come to this site to escape the strange world of CA politics to come enjoy the sane world of Cal football. Save your opinions for somewhere else.

  • The Wisdom Cow

Just skip them then, Scotty. If a Bear fan wants to express something with other Bear fans, who are you to be moderator?

  • ScottyBear

Just a courtesy response to your comments, not a moderation. Yes, we are here because we are Bear fans, not Rachel Maddow fans. This site is for Cal football and if you want to express something totally unrelated, go to a different site. I bet 95% of the readers here would agree. This site is our one escape from all the political BS that the media shoves in our face. Please don’t be a typical liberal who just can’t leave well enough alone. Go Bears!!

  • The Wisdom Cow

Nothing about me is typical, Scotty. Take your escapism and shove it.

You could have just let it go, too, instead of being a typical conservative censure freak. I disagree with Kotempman, but I respect him for voicing his beliefs, especially when contrary to what he feels is the popular opinion. I know I can still root for the Bears with him, regardless.

I happen to like hearing the views of fellow Cal fans, and Cal alums, rather than the SFGate crowd or some other troll ridden area where any actual discussion between people that know they have a common thread can always fall back on.

If you need an escape from the media, stop listening to them, stop reading them, and skip posts you don’t want to read.

Politics are relevent to all thing Cal. From money buying Oregon a slap on the wrist to how jerrymandering will effect whether the state will support or penalize Cal for the memorial stadium budget to admissions policies to sports budgets having enough money to keep sports playing.

Your Cal experience may never have involved a stroll through Spoul plaza – laughing off a cause here, contemplating the validity of a cause there, being outraged over some other cause or the way some group tries to frame an argument – or perhaps you walked around it to escape. Many of us did not, and it’s a component of the Cal experience.

I wouldn’t want to watch a Cal game next to you, Scotty. I’d hate to spoil your experience if anything not sport specific happened to come up. Whereas, I’d be down with watching a game with Kotempman, and having a meaningful discussion when sports topics failed to fill a halftime or pre/post game activities.

Good thing I know I can skip reading your posts.

  • ScottyBear

Obviously you don’t skip reading my posts, Cow, because you just wasted a lot of time responding to mine trying to justify who you are. Shove it? Very impressive. You are the one who brought up abortions, Christians and homosexuals on this site, and nobody here is interested in your opinions about that. This is my belief, also, that I just voiced, so as you just said about Kotemptman, you should respect that as well.

For your information, I walked through Sproul Plaza everyday at Cal walking to the locker room to get ready for varsity football and baseball practice. I respected everyone’s rights there to pass out their flyers, or on Lower Sproul to play their bongos and dance around, but I didn’t have any interest in having them follow me into the locker room and doing it right there. Kind of like you are here today.

Don’t worry Cow, I would never sit next to you at a Cal game. Your spot on Tightwad Hill is reserved for you and your liberal buddies who never played the game. Enjoy not reading this.

  • Larry

3 things to NEVER discuss at the dinner table and CAL football blogs: religion, politics, and how much you make. Nobody care whether you went to CAL or Oral Roberts University, these don’t belong here. STFU!

  • The Wisdom Cow

Giving the student athlete a bad name, what did I bring up, Scotty? A little more light shed on the poor academic numbers, lol.

  • ScottyBear

    Agreed Larry!

  • Gobears49

    Wisdom Cow,

Love reading about your football views, but since you bring up politics, let me correct you. The real censure freaks are people who are liberal, not conservative. I started on the road to conservatism when I was at Cal when, after my freshman year in the late 60′s the liberals on campus put pressure on the administration not to allow any conservative speak on campus. I always thought that students went to college to hear both sides of an argument, to help them better make up their own minds. Not at Cal and not at most colleges now, where conservatives rarely get invited to speak at graduation ceremonies and to speak at functions during the year. I have found in my life that liberals don’t like to debate anything and just like to call you names when you dare disagree with them on politics.

I am not going to debate you on this, as no doubt you will disagree. Now let’s get back to Cal football.

  • The Wisdom Cow

GoBears, again, I ain’t typical. This post is dead, so why not keep going.

I agree and disagree. I think a big problem is with the labels, social vs fiscal and state minded vs federal minded can all blur and be lost when using “liberal” and “conservative” as generalized labels.

I agree with your post when it comes to social conservatives (though, again, even there ones’ definitions can vary greatly). Even what I would consider quite reasonable social conservativism (say, a church strong in their views but tolerant of others without vocalized judgement), definitely would not be invited to speak, when in truth, most “liberals” could really use an earful of what they have to say.

I definitely lose patience with social conservatives, and am quick to lump them into stereotypes.

Now, fiscal conservativism, actual economic discussion from before the “trickle down” BS became a fall back for those that don’t understand economics, that is something EVERYONE would be better off understanding. When it is discussed, few disagree with the concepts, only the extent to which it should be applied.

I think a big problem is that people do consider discussion, debate. It isn’t about winning. It’s about learning both sides to try and see what best fits. Debate always lacks the ground work needed to do anything but quibble over conclusions, usually addressed to different problems, with both sides right subjectively and neither side actually knowing what problem the other is addressing. I like to learn.

That said, anyone on either extreme for socialism or the free market is an imbicil, and I lose patience with them in a hurry, too.

Last, as all I really brought up was the VRA decision, which I have a hard time accepting, still, it is funny to read the whole thread again to see how quickly it spirals.

  • The Wisdom Cow

To make clear. I don’t like to debate politics. I’ll debate the 3-4 being better for the Bears right now than the 4-3. I’ll discuss politics.

  • kotempman

I love this site just because we are free to express anything at any time no matter if you go against protocol, to me that’s true freedom, and I salute you all my fellow brethren….I would love to sit at a game or have a beer with all of you regardless of our beliefs…GO BEARS…and I’m proud to go with you!!!!!!!

  • ScottyBear

    Agree with you 100% Gobears49!
