Swimming: Coughlin, Franklin win at worlds

Natalie Coughlin and Missy Franklin — Cal swim stars past and soon to be — helped the U.S. win a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle relay at the World Championships in Barcelona.

Franklin, the Bears’ highly decorated incoming freshman, swam the lead leg and Coughlin, winner of 12 Olympic medals, went next as the team set an American record of 3 minutes, 32.31 seconds to edge runnerup Australia.

Also, Cal alum Lauren Boyle won a bronze medal for New Zealand in the 400 freestyle.
