Swimming: Franklin’s win streak ends at Worlds

Cal freshman-to-be and U.S. Olympic swim star Missy Franklin’s unbeaten run at the FINA World Championships finally came to an end Friday in Barcelona.

Franklin, who won gold medals in her first four events, finished fourth in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 53.47 seconds. Australia’s Cate Campbell won gold at 52.34.

Franklin returned barely 20 minutes later to swim the fastest semifinal time in the 200 backstroke, touching in 2:06.46. The 200 back final is Saturday.

Ex-Cal stars Anthony Ervin and Nathan Adrian were second and third, respectively, in the 50 free semifinals, clocking 21.42 and 21.60. Former Cal swimmer Dana Vollmer was fifth in the 50 butterfly semifinals at 26.06, also advancing to the final.
