Fair to say Cal is getting a pretty fair swimmer in Missy Franklin.
The incoming freshman won her sixth gold medal at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona on Sunday, making her the winningest female ever at the event.
Franklin, 18, swam the leadoff leg on the winning USA 400-meter medley relay — ex-Cal star Dana Vollmer also had a hand in the victory — to break the record of five gold medals shared by Tracy Caukins in 1978 and Libby Trickett in 2007.
”I still can’t really believe that it happened,” Franklin said.
Franklin and her teammates won in 3 minutes, 53.23 seconds — nearly two seconds ahead of runnerup Australia.
It’s been quite a 13 months for Franklin, who won four gold medals and a bronze at the 2012 London Olympics.
