With an assist from Phil Jensen on our staff, covering practice for me today, some recruiting news . . .

Devante Downs, rated a four-star running back by Rivals, announced via Twitter he has committed to Cal.

A 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior at Mountlake Terrace High in Lynnwood, Washington will not play this season according to mitnews.com. Downs suffered a torn ACL at a team camp in June according to the report.

Downs is also projected as a potential linebacker, but told Scout.com he was recruited by Cal to play running back and that’s his preference. He said Cal’s highly regarded chemistry program was a significant factor in his decision.

Rivals ranks him as the No. 210 overall prospect in the country — No. 2 among players in the state of Washington. Scout.com ranks him as a three-star prospect and the top fullback in the country.

Other schools that offered Downs, according to Rivals, included Stanford, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Oregon State and Nebraska.

As a junior last season, he rushed for more than 1,200 yards and scored 23 touchdowns.

hold off on the RBs, don’t want Mixon to choose another because Cal’s got too many backs.

  • The Wisdom Cow

Yeah, they’d take all Mixon’s playing time. LOL.

Love it that, “Cal’s highly regarded chemistry program was a significant factor in his decision.”

    Welcome to Cal, Devante!

Per twitter: Mixon: Cal has the “inside track” along w Fla. Other 3 schools to complete his top 5 to follow.

Competition is good, see ZK and JG. If JM is afraid of competition, he’s not…

That’s true, I just really think Mixon is going to be very special and want him to come to Cal.

Getting this fullback is super. But! Mixon is amazing I saw some video of him – outstanding speed and vision. There were many plays where the defense has a great angle to tackle him and then it vanishes as he blows by them. I saw Florida also got a commit from RB ranked much higher than Downs – so maybe that will give him more of reason to choose Cal.
