Football: Give me your predictions on Cal season

By Jeff Faraudo
Wednesday, August 28th, 2013 at 10:32 pm in Football.

We’re in the final countdown to Saturday’s season opener and I want to hear from all of you on how you expect Sonny Dykes’ first season to unfold.

You’ve probably read my projections — a 6-6 season would be a remarkable achievement, given all the changes, the youth and the schedule.

But I’m not assuming everyone views this the same as I do, so here’s your chance to chime in:

TRUE OR FALSE:

Cal will . . .

1) beat Northwestern in Saturday’s opener

2) average at least 35 points this season

3) score at least 50 points in one game (not counting Portland State)

4) be held without an offensive touchdown in a game this season

5) change quarterbacks before season’s end for a reason other than injury

6) beat USC in Berkeley

7) beat Stanford on the road

8) win four games or fewer

9) win eight games or more

10) play in a bowl game

Send me your answers by Saturday morning and I’ll compile the results before kickoff that night.

[You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.]

  • CamHand

    Cal will . . .

    1) beat Northwestern in Saturday’s opener
No, but if we all wish really hard and clap our hands really hard then maybe, just maybe…

    2) average at least 35 points this season
No, but there will be outbursts that will push the average pretty darn close

    3) score at least 50 points in one game (not counting Portland State)
Hmmm… naaah, who am I kidding even thinking about it?

    4) be held without an offensive touchdown in a game this season
Nope, but it’s not an unreasonable question

    5) change quarterbacks before season’s end for a reason other than injury
Dykes doesn’t like to play two, and he won’t “change” QB’s, but we will see more than one play

    6) beat USC in Berkeley
    Not this year

    7) beat Stanford on the road
As much as I would like to think… wait, even considering it this year is nuts

    8) win four games or fewer
Sadly, yes. Not fewer, though, just four. It will be improvement, though, because (rough as the team will look at times) it will be exciting and fun football

    9) win eight games or more
I want some of whatever you’re smoking.

    10) play in a bowl game
Not at four wins. Not even if I’m wrong and they get five. Six? I don’t see it with this schedule.

  • Brian A

    4) be held without an offensive touchdown in a game this season
    FALSE. BEAR RAID BABY!

    5) change quarterbacks before season’s end for a reason other than injury
TRUE, but because Zach Kline’s talent catches up with his potential

    6) beat USC in Berkeley
TRUE. gotta believe, you gotta believe!

    7) beat Stanford on the road
TRUE. This team will finish strong

    8) win four games or fewer

  • kotempman

    1. Beat Northwestern? Yes, like I stated in a earlier blog, Northwestern is not going to know what hit them!

    2. Average 35 points a game? Yes, They led nation with less talent last year at Tech, and don’t forget they put 55 points up against Texas A&M!

    3. Score 50 in one game not counting Portland St.? Yes, see answer #2. BTW, I don’t think they will score that many against Portland St. because Sonny will smartly pull starters and play a lot of second and third string and not tip his hand too much before Ohio St.

    4. Be held without a offensive touchdown in a game this season? Nope! That has about as much of a chance as happening as Miley Cyrus becoming a great dancer.

    5. Change Quarterbacks other than for injury before season ends? No. Sorry Jauncho, Goff is cool, calm and mature although Kline will play a lot of snaps so it’s a win win situation for us!

    6. Beat USC in Berkeley? Yes, because enough is enough! Lane and company will implode this season and the time will be right for Cal.

    7. Beat Stanford on road? No, only because of Stanford’s experience but it will be a absolute shoot out! But, I just have this feeling about Cal this year because they had the game pass them by with Tedford in second half of season and they just lost interest.

    8. Win four games or fewer? Yea right!!! NO WAY JAY!!!!

    9. Win eight games or more? You bet! Yes, eight is what I believe they will win because of surprise factor. Remember how Cal never played up to their ranking under Tedford? Is not going to happen under this coach, folks!

    10. Play in bowl game? You betcha! Sonny and company are the right stuff and we will be blessed if we can keep them.

Notes; I predict 3-0 start with Mixon being blown away while watching Cal vs Ohio St. game on sidelines and will smartly choose Cal and this beautiful environment to play football. BTW, am I the only one who thinks Cal should of beat Ohio St. last year at their place? Imagine if we would have had this offense last year! Watch what happens this year!!!! You can take it to the bank!!!! Go Bears!!!!!

    1. sadly, false
    2. false. (maybe against PSU, WSU, and Colorado, but not otherwise)
3 false, but we’ll see if Dykes wants to pile it on against WSU or CU.
    4. False, but the Big Game is a real possibility.
5.True. Unless Goff is the next Joe Montana, Kline will be a shot. He’s too good to sit out the entire season.
    6. False. Aaron Rodgers barely did it in triple overtime, and that team had a good, healthy defense.
    7. False. see comment above. Afterward, Jeff Tedford isgoing to start looking real good.
    8. True. Probably just four (PSU, WSU, Colorado, and either Oregon State or Arizona.
9 False. Look at the depth chart and then say “rebuilding year” three times.
    10. false. Some of thekids will play in the Shrine game or the Senior Bowl, but that’s as close as it gets.

Too much to type on this phone but…

We win 5-6 games this year including NW. Probably lose to both furd and USC. We get blown out at least once. But the team is fun to watch again.

    1. Beat Northwestern? Would be great, might happen 1 time out of 15, but no, experience beats youth.

    2. Average 35 points a game? No, Pac-12 defenses are too stiff.

    3. Score 50 in one game not counting Portland St.? Nope

    4. Be held without a offensive touchdown in a game this season? Yes.

    5. Change Quarterbacks other than for injury before season ends? Probably. Not as punishment, but maybe to settle him down after a couple of mistakes.

    6. Beat USC in Berkeley? Nope, too much talent on the other side.

    7. Beat Stanford on road? No, there’s a reason why they’re ranked in the top 5.

    8. Win four games or fewer? Yes. I see 2-3 wins this season.

    9. Win eight games or more? nay.

    10. Play in bowl game? nay.
