Football: Cal-Ohio State game thread

By Jeff Faraudo
Saturday, September 14th, 2013 at 3:35 pm in Football, Gameday.

FINAL SCORE: Ohio State 52, Cal 34. Goff finished 31 for 53 for 371 yards with three TDs. Guiton was 21 for 32 for 276 yards and four TDs and rushed for 92 yards. Ohio State totaled  608 yards.

Cal is 1-2 with a bye week before opening Pac-12 play at Oregon, which is averaging better than 61 points per game.

THIRD QTR: The Buckeyes enter the final 15 minutes leading 52-27. In case you’re curious (or sadistic), Cal hadn’t allowed this many points in a nonconference game since Nevada and Colin Kaepernick scored 52 in 2010.

Cal hasn’t allowed more than that to a non-Pac-12 foe since a 66-0 loss at Alabama in 1973.

Through three quarters,  Goff is 26 for 43 for 327 yards.

SECOND QTR: Jordan Hall’s 1-yard plunge makes it 31-14 with 8:2o left in half. Second time it appeared Buckeyes’ hurry-up goal-line offense scored before Cal defense was entirely ready.

More Sonny Dykes subterfuge: Goff comes off field on fourth-and-7 from Ohio St as punt team comes on. But Goff and punter Cole Leininger both wear No. 16, so Buckeyes don’t notice Goff is back on field. His 11-yard completion to Caleb Coleman — freshman WR from St. Mary’s HS-Berkeley — sets up 43-yard field goal by D’Amato on final play at half.

Cal pulls within 31-20 and we still have a game.

Halftime stat leaders: Ohio State had 365 total yards to 291 for Cal. Goff was 21 for 34 for 239 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The Bears rushed for 52 yards, led by 21 from freshman Khalfani Muhammad.

FIRST QTR: Ohio State wins the coin flip and defers. Cal will receive the opening kickoff and will defend the north goal.

Cal fans may remember Devin Smith, who just caught that 90-yard TD pass for a 7-0 Buckeyes lead. He was the same guy whose 72-yard TD reception beat the Bears in Columbus last season.  Beat redshirt freshman Damariay Drew for the touchdown.

You think Smith would like to play every game of his career against the Bears?

Now 14-0 — Smith with  a47-yard TD catch. That’s two TD drives covering 163 yards in elapsed time of 58 seconds.

Now 21-0 — Guiton’s third TD pass and there still are 9 minutes left in 1st qtr.

0:55 left in 1st Qtr and we already have 38 points: Ohio St 24-14. Cal alive.

END OF 1ST QTR: Ohio State 24, Cal 14.

Stats highlights: Ohio State 275 yards, Ca; 170. Goff 13 for 17 for 182 yards, 2 TDs, 1 int. Cal 6 rushes for minus-12 yards.

*****

WELCOME: Spectacular day at Strawberry Canyon for Cal vs. Ohio State.

Lots of red in Memorial Stadium — if Cal fans are loud this may be a neutral environment. Otherwise, the Buckeyes appear ready to make a lot of noise.

QB Braxton Miller not dressed and warming up with his OSU teammates. It will be Kenny Guiton, making his first start since his senior season at Eisenhower HS in Houston.

We’ll see if it matters, or if the Bears can take advantage.

For Cal, LB Nick Forbes and DE Chris McCain are warming up.

Word out of Tucson: Ex-Cal linebacker David Wilkerson (Monte Vista HS) has officially been aded to the Arizona roster.

  • The Wisdom Cow

    Buh!

  • SteveNTexas

A few plays in the game and we are already embarrassing ourselves vs a 2nd string qb who just made us look like a high school team… on national tv no less.

Trying to be positive I have several projects to work on and if they play like this I wont be watching long.

  • joey

Dykes sucks! He was a bad hire. Admit the mistake and get rid of him.

  • Eric

Yes, two bad snaps is on Dykes.

  • The Wisdom Cow

    Buh! Again.

  • SteveNTexas

now its 14-0 Ohio State players laughing their asses off on the sidelines.

    WE SUCK

  • Juancho

At least this gives me a chance to watch all the prefight shows for tonights big boxing match.

  • joey

Crappy defense and poor execution is on Dykes. He does not know how to prepare a talented team for a game.

  • The Wisdom Cow

Defense matters. I hate that I feel like it is not a priority for Dykes beyond talking points.

  • Ray Finkle

This coaching staff is embarrassing, to be honest. No way in hell our D should be this bad. Unwatchable slop

  • The Wisdom Cow

    Tedford anyone?

  • DB

It’s a home game for Ohio State.

  • joey

Tedford was way better than this. What a joke. When does basketball season start?

  • The Wisdom Cow

I waited all day long so I could watch Cal be out of it in five minutes? This blows.

  • Ray Finkle

It appears that many of the concerns with terrible defense and undisciplined football are here to stay….wow

  • Ray Finkle

Huge score, need a turnover bad. I don’t want to change the channel yet. Come on BEARS!

  • The Wisdom Cow

I didn’t even crack a smile on that TD. I won’t be happy at all until the D shows it can get a stop, not tOSU mistaking their way to a stop. I want to see a D that can stop the other team.

  • DB

Dykes has never cared about defense.

  • Ray Finkle

Turnover!! Maybe the world isn’t ending

  • Ray Finkle

    Flush it. Time for yardwork.

  • SteveNTexas

There is only one available play that could salvage the future of Cal Football. If we don’t do it we will waste 2 seasons arguing on how much of a chance Dykes deserves.

That play is for Dykes to run out to midfield, pull of his clothes and bend over. Aside from Sandy’s initial enjoyment, and the otherwise accurate depiction of our abilities, she will be forced to terminate him.

Do it for the team Dykes.

  • joey

    Ticket prices are falling.

  • DB

Buckeyes on pace to score 96.

  • The Wisdom Cow

3rd and long, Buh better bring heat. Gotta love tOSU errors giving us a chance, but the D looks so poorly prepared.

  • Wehofx

Joey = moron (one of it’s innumerae sn aliases)

front running bandwagoners. Hah. Win or lose our bears showing heart and stones.

    Go Bears

  • Wehofx

Eric, looks like km moved ahead of bigs in rotation!

  • Eric

    Powe makes that catch…

Come guys, we are STILL IN THIS.

  • Juancho

I like the new staff. It will take them three years to be competitive at cal.

But. Jim harbaugh and stanford took off when he FIRED ANDY BUH. This has been my contention since before he was hired. He will never be the answer if we want to get to an elite level.

  • Juancho

Well give up less points in the second half. But those adjustments dont mean diddley when we get out schemed and prepared all during the first half.

  • Eric

    @Juancho

Maybe so. But the D last 4 drives have been competitive. Two 4th and goal TDs, a fumble, and a punt. That’s not bad.

Of course, if WC’s hero was still the coach, he would have kicked FGs on both 4th and goals…while losing.

  • Joey

    Wehufx = Tedford hater/Dykes apologist = douche.
I want a respectable football program that is watchable. Cut our losses and cut Dykes. Get a proven or up and coming coach. Dykes is neither.

  • stay golden

Should have called TO on that 4th & goal play. They were not ready.

  • The Wisdom Cow

Two scores on 4th was showing toughness, but on the second one, a time out should definitely have been called as it is the first half. Otherwise, the fumble and punt (off the ad snap 15 yard loss series) were on tOSU, not caused by our D.

This will be another four hour marathon, goff with huge numbers, but never really having a chance. Hoping the other team makes mistakes is not defense.

If we can be within 14 at halftime, there is a chance, but both defenses are going to be exhausted by the 4th quarter.

They call a defensive 13-10 game ugly. This is uglier, IMO.

  • 1brsfan

As bad as the D started we’re still in it, barely. Goff has missed two wide open guys down the middle or this would be a 7 point game. I agree with Juancho that Buh is not the answer at D.

  • Eric

31-20 at the half. We may get blown out in the second half.

This team is young, and it is a flawed product.

But if ANYONE questions their heart, or their willingness to go toe to toe, or pull out all of the stops to try to win, that person literally knows nothing about college football.

You see exactly why Tedford was fired, and why this guy was hired. Flea flicker? Hook and ladder? QB at the helm on a fake punt? Willingness to play true freshmen in critical situations?

We had everything go wrong in the first quarter, and we’re now within two scores, and easily could have made it a one score game.

Last year, we lost because Tedford had zero guts when it mattered most. No one can legitimately dispute who has cojones.

Whatever happens the rest of this game, enough of the attacks on Dykes, at least for today.

  • The Wisdom Cow

    Fake punt, lol.

I was never a fan of the speed offense. Now, I am decidedly against it.

I always thought of football as a chess match + execution. That ain’t this. This is abusing the system trying to get an advantage. It’s not a hurry up to try to keep the opposing D on the field or because little time is on the clock. It is purely to not let the D get set.

IMO, it is cheesy. It’s “I can abuse the rules better than you.” It leads to sloppy play by the other D, not because you out smarted them, but because you snapped the ball before they were ready.

    —————

That said, Goff and co have done a good job so far. If Buh can adjust enough at halftime, their D should be spent by the 4th, so hope remains.

  • Eric

I forgot to add – this is the second ranked team in the country, coming off an undefeated season but is better this year, with numerous all-American candidates, with a (granted backup) QB who can sling it and run it, with a coach who is one of the best.

I said earlier this week have no expectations. Sadly, because of what I have seen, I actually believe we have a chance. Key will be the first two drives of the third quarter – do we stop them, and do we score?

  • MoreNCsarecoming

A lot of “we look pretty good in a loss” comments from state fans. Typical for a perennial losing program.

  • Rollonubears

This is a fun team to watch. Except for the failed time out call, they did all the things I always wanted tedford to do. And they executed most of them. Buh needs to grow up fast, but if we brought this effort and had our full defense, we’d be tied.

Buh and secondary coach (sacks) r not afraid tm make changes. Putting in walker – true frosh – and Willis for lapite & Logan was the start of slwowing down aOSU O
Bigs does not look tlclose to rb he was last year. Balance not great. Not breaking tackles.

Stay G, agree that sd shoulda called to after 3rd and goal stop. IMO that was sd being too O oriented. But. He’s not stubborn, I predict he will admit mistake and learn from it.

Your coach is a whiner and an embarassment to the profession

  • Rollonubears

Says the whiner with no profession. Awesome. I’m going to take great pleasure in our trouncing of the condoms.

  • The Wisdom Cow

Now a time out? Second half and not a scoring pop? Sigh.

    ————-

    Then the play happened. Ouch.

    ————–

I’m done posting. Hoping for a comeback but not optimistic. Goff will have huge numbers and I won’t enjoy it, which bothers me. I did find it odd that the halftime quote was that Cal players believed they could play with tOSU half way through the 1st. Wtf? We almost beat them in their house last year! Why did any player doubt themselves to begin with?

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Urban was playing with you guys in the first half

  • SteveNTexas

Eric stop finding excuses. If we would have had a star QB and lost him for the game -our fans would be whining and howling.
OSU realized after 3 minutes that we weren’t going to be competitive.

We can rationalize away every game, but when we do that we are doing ourselves a great disservice. We can and should love Cal,we are a great school and a relatively clean program with real standards, but we still suck at football

  • MoreNCsarecoming

If OSU scores again CMS the exits will be filled with fans in blue and gold.

  • Eric

@Steve – they are not excuses. Did you really, truly expect to win this game? Do you expect Indiana to beat Ohio State – the answer should be the same.

  • Eric

And just to confirm, it must be your expectation that the team will not improve at all over the next year, next year, or any year thereafter as long as Dykes is the coach. Please confirm because, as you say, Cal suck at football.
