FINAL SCORE: Cal 83, Humboldt State 61. The Bears led by as many as 32 points in their exhibition win. Freshman Jordan Mathews led the way with 15 points, Justin Cobbs had 13, Ricahrd Solomon had 11 points and nine rebounds and David Kravish had 10 points and eight rebounds. Jabari Bird added nine points, four assists and two blocks as the five Cal freshman combined for 33 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. Cal shot 47 percent, Humboldt 33 percent. The Bears missed 15 free throws, six of them by freshman PG Sam Singer, who has to be better than 1 for 7. Cal allowed the Lumberjacks just 21 points in the first half, then 4o in the second. That won’t be a high point for Mike Montgomery.
6:51 2nd H: Jordan Mathews with four 3-point baskets in a span of 2:38 and Cal leads 74-44. Mathews has 15 points.
11:05 2nd H: Cal leads 56-35, which means the Bears have been outscored 14-11 in the half so far. Predictably sloppy. Cal shooting 5 for 17 in the half.
HALFTIME SCORE: Cal leads 45-21. Bears are shooting 48 percent, Humboldt 27 percent. Cal has 32-13 rebounding edge. Downside: Cal 3 for 12 on 3-pointers, 12 for 20 on FTs. The five freshman combined for 39 minutes, contributing 12 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists.

13:15 1st H: Cal leads 16-9. Bears scored on first six possessions to lead 13-5. Cobbs with nine points already. Three freshmen — Jabari Bird, Jordan Mathews and Roger Moute a Bidias — already on the floor. And with 12:44 left, freshman Sam Singer joins them.
STARTING LINEUPS: Tyrone Wallace, Ricky Kreklow, David Kravish, Richard Solomon and Justin Cobbs will start for the Bears. You don’t care who’s playing for the Lumberjacks (unless you are my brother, who attended school in drippy Arcata).
Here at Memorial Stadium . . . er, Haas Pavilion for tonight’s exhibition opener against Humboldt State.
A modest crowd on hand to watch the Bears in their debut after last season’s 21-victory season. Among those here, former USF coach Phil Mathews, father of Cal freshman guard Jordan Mathews.
