Basketball: Richard Solomon to miss Syracuse game with corneal abrasion to right eye

Cal senior forward Richard Solomon has been medically ruled out for the Golden Bears’ game against No. 8 Syracuse this afternoon in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational.

Solomon sustained a right corneal abrasion in the second half of Monday’s 85-77 victory over Arkansas.

He has averaged 11.0 ppg. and 11.4 rpg. in Cal’s first five contests this season. Solomon had started the previous 22 games and appeared in the last 38 contests for the Bears entering Tuesday.

He scored 22 points in Cal’s NCAA tournament loss to Syracuse last season.

Solomon had 11 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks in 20 minutes of action in the victory against the Razorbacks.

Why does this sort of thing always happen to us in our higher profile opportunities to make a national statement? Ugh. He will be sorely missed tonight.

“Ugh” is right. What a blow.

Ouch, literally. Hope there is no permanent damage/scaring. Wear goggle from now on?

Also, does anyone know if there is a fingernail regulation/check? All players fingernails should by checked by the refs before playing, given all the swiping around the face those things can be weapons.

I was thinking the same thing, KC. These injuries, along with Sandy Barbour, are killing us.

It’s only a huge blow if he was going to stay out of foul trouble, which he has yet to do against better opposition. Yeah, still a big void to fill for minutes at C, but Solomon has vanished before.

Give solo a break. He’s improved every year. Solo played well yesterday w 3.

Kreklow was in 30’s. Be interesting to see who gets solo’s minutes. Moute and rooks? Or behrens?

    Bird time?

    Beat cuse!

Our sports teams seem to be cursed.

Kravish’s third foul (weak call) was the game changer. 4th foul was a clear foul, but that should have been the third. Game was over at that point.

I agree. We’re cursed. Seems like we never catch a break. In these big games were always under manned for some reason or another. It’s never the opponent.
