Football: Another CSM commit to Cal

The Bears landed their second College of San Mateo commitment on the defensive side of the ball after weekend campus visits when safety Sam Atoe joined teammate Trevor Kelly, according to a report on Scout.com.

Atoe,  listed as 5-foot-11, 215 pounds, is rated as a two-star prospect by Scout. He will arrive next fall with two years of eligibility remaining, plus a redshirt year available.

A former running back at Maria Carrillo HS in Santa Rosa, Atoe also had offers from Texas Tech and TCU.

Reminds me of a few years back when Chris Moncrease signed on. Some of the chatter had him being a Taylor Mays. He ended up being a good back up to DJ Campbell and good on special teams. Based on Atoe’s specs, looks like a strong safety.

Some JC transfers that worked out pretty well for Cal: Aaron Rodgers, Garrett Cross, C.J. Anderson, Matt Giordano, J.J. Arrington. Tedford early on loaded up his roster with JC players and built Cal into a national power within a few short years. I think it can be a shrewd move if Dykes feels like he has a very short rope (he does) to start winning.

I remember when San Jose State was routinely beating up on Cal in the mid 80’s. Their roster was loaded up with JC transfers, including a quarterback named Mike Perez who carved up Cal like a Christmas ham. Shortly after, the school announced it was going to focus exclusively on four-year recruits. That plan obviously didn’t work out too well until very recently.

2 DL & 1 SS/FS from JC, so far so good. We now need a Juco OL (tackle) and a pair of Juco DBs who excel at playing the pass. If we can accomplish this, we will be in good shape heading into Feb 5th.

The Bears should look to the Butte College team. They just won the state championship on Saturday with a win over an undefeated Fullerton team.

Who are their top D-1 ready players? Any cornerbacks?

Wes McCoy, DB/WR and great return guy (5-9, 175)
    London Muse, DB (6-0, 195)

I don’t know how these guys are ranked in scouting services. Butte tends to slip under the radar.
