Football: Dykes on the Bears’ newcomers

Sonny Dykes called it “a good day.”

The Bears signed four JC players and an early high school graduate on Wednesday.

Here’s more from Dykes on Cal’s signees:

SAM ATOE: S/OLB, 5-11, 205, College of San Mateo
“Sam was one of the best football players I have seen in this recruiting cycle. He does it all on special teams and can play a bunch of different positions on defense. He’s an incredibly versatile athlete and very dynamic football player who runs, hits, plays in space and tackles. He has a tremendous work ethic and attitude, and he plays with great passion. He’s going to bring a lot of leadership to our program.”

DAVID DAVIS: DT, 6-2, 295, Long Beach City College
“David is (a) defensive tackle that plays with great pad level and great effort and is very productive. He is also a hard worker with a great mind that comes from a tremendous football family. He knows what it takes to be great.”

DEVANTE DOWNS: ATH, 6-2, 225, Fr., Mountlake Terrace (Wash.) HS
“Devante is an exceptional athlete who is big and athletic and can play a variety of positions. He’s gone back and forth about where he want to play. We’re going to let him play where he wants to. He’s got great size and explosiveness and is powerful. We’re really excited for him to get in here and start contributing to our program. He’s physically advanced for a kid coming out of high school and that will give him an opportunity to play early and help us win football games. He’s a complete total fit at Cal both academically and athletically.”

JONATHAN JOHNSON: DE/OLB, 6-4, 260, Pierce College
“We needed to sign a difference maker as a pass rusher and when we put the video on we thought that Jonathan was the best one we saw. He’s a great speed rusher who plays with tremendous effort. He has a passion for the game that is contagious. I love the way he plays the game. He has a huge upside and I think he will be a significant contributor to our program from the day he sets foot on campus. Jonathan Johnson is exactly what we needed as the defensive end spot.”

TREVOR KELLY: DT, 6-3, 305, College of San Mateo
“Trevor is a powerful and explosive athlete who is very productive at the defensive tackle position. He plays with great pad level, uses his hands well and has tremendous strength in the weight room. Trevor Kelly is a load inside, he’s a man.”

dave davis and john johnson. those ones should be easy to remember.

    go bears!

  • Gobears49

Someone help me out to understand what Dykes means by “great pad level.” Does that mean he contacts the offensive lineman low?

  • Pasadena Dave

Rollon – Maybe we’ll get 5-star prospect, Ricky Bobby, to sign with us during the Feb. signing period. Sweet baby Jesus, that would be great.

JF, sorry for cross-posting but Sonny Dykes needs to read this about CAL Rugby and its Coach, Jack Clark.

I’m hoping someone on here has Dykes’ email or some way to contact him – to get this article to him so Dykes can read it.

Then Dykes needs to ensure all of his players read it. Twice.

Then Dykes must invite Mr Clark to have a few words with the CAL Football “team” so these young men (and their Coaches!) comprehend what a team is and (hopefully) begin performing like one.

I see no reason, in the abstract, why CAL Football can’t enjoy the same success as CAL Rugby, both on and off the field. Create the right culture, instill accountability and purpose, and make it happen.

    Go BEARS!!

  • MoreNCsarecoming

I knew that Lupoi was dirty from day one when he was AT Cal. I just hope the NCAA digs deep enough and busts your program. There is no way that kid could get those players to your losing program without unethical stuff happening.

It’s your turn UC East Bay. Stand up and take your licking.

  • rollonubears

it’s nice that we keep winning national championships in a club sport that few care about, but jack clark did not save the white house from a terrorist attack. the collective pole worship for jack clark has gotten out of hand. great coach, great guy, but come on.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Rugby = club sport…yes you are so right.

Women’s two team badmitton is also a club sport too.

No one makes a big deal about a club sport except UC East Bay and its rugby team. I guess that is what is to be done with your only consistent winning program.

  • Mr. B

    No sh!t Sherlock.

“I think we’re all conscious of the fact that we don’t want to be seen as dining out on what Mark did. Mark did that. We didn’t do it.”

That’s from the article. Usually I like you, but your MoreN-ish comment evidences your failure to read the article before spouting off. That’s lame for a CAL grad; so is your homophobic slip.

To be clear: It is not about Jack Clark.

It is about instilling a culture that commands individuals to constantly perform at their best. A culture where excellence is expected in all things. Creating an environment that taps into the unique strengths of each individual for the greater good of the team.

CAL Football in no way resembles a team at this point. Teams win.

  • rollonubears

    sorry mr. b,

i just couldn’t take it anymore. i’m so sick of hearing about jack clark and how wonderful he is. that’s really all. i didn’t read the article because i was so disappointed with the way it began. at least i clicked on it! i don’t think my comment was homophobic in the least. i was going to say “deification” but chose pole worship instead because it thought it was funnier. anyhow, sorry if I offended. i occasionally say stuff i regret on here, and am quick to respond. i really like this board, but after seeing some of the other boards, where people are actually calling for jc to be the head coach, seeing this article (the beginning part) just put me over the top.

ok, back to just being a grumpy alum, lamenting 2013…

  • Mr. B

    No worries Rollon!

I was probably a bit to eager to go on the attack, thus read too much into your pole worship comment.

Its kinda funny bc over on CGB, wher the article was posted, its more like a Lindsay Brauner worship than anything else. She wrote the article and ppl are gushing with praise.

Can we please not mention rival blogs here. Thank you.

The VP of BTB has spoken 🙂

what do you think is going through haden’s head right now?

gotta a ton of grief from $c alumni when he hired sark.

cube the grief when udub UPGRADED w petersen – an hc who rejected haden’s overtures.

now, ‘ho-gate. if haden knew then, what he knows now, no way he hires sark.

if the allegations are proven, how could sark not know about the ‘ho’s low rent-soprano-wanna-be sleaze?

GB49, all coaches preach leverage. “Lowest man wins.”

  • rollonubears

i can’t believe they haven’t let him go already. kind of hilarious. is u$c paying tosh right now?

  • Caladan

Coach Dykes! Do the right thing and release Zach Kline to play for Oregon State.

  • GoGoBears

Anyone want to be that moron will be posting on Tuesday night? It’s not as if he will have anyplace to go. Even Pastor Rick has left him.

All alone for the holidays. Maybe they will hire you to make Home Alone 5 — if they want to cast a social outkast in his 30s who has no friends and only has sex when he pays for it.

Your posts are getting meaner, Moron — I guess I’m under your skin.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

“Your posts are getting meaner – I guess I’m under your skin” really GoGo Bears aka The Advising Bear on BI aka at least 50 sign ins on scout and SF Gate?

Let’s talk about getting under someone’s skin.

There is a poster on this site named “The Wisdom Cow”. He (as well as you) posted regularly on SF Gate. I believe that by profession The Cow is a lawyer not a very wise one thanks in part to you.

You led him to believe that I was some poor lady who worked at UC Davis. The Cow outs her on a public blog. He gives not only her name but he gives her personal details, where she worked, etc. on a public blog!

Then a bunch of UC East Bay sheep who read his information began to harass this poor woman at her workplace. Obviously she was an innocent victim (just like EW was an innocent victim). Tired of being bullied and intruded upon she got onto the blog in order to make a disclaimer. The Cow was lucky she didn’t get an attorney and sue.

I believe The Cow made an apology. However, it was you who was at fault because you did nothing to stop him. You led him to believe all of that garbage. Instead of apologizing for being the real culprit you just weaseled your way into the background. That was the true actions of a coward and a mean one too.

That’s reality folks. I am sure that is why GldnBear71 told you that you are acting shamefully immature.

Punked again! You are too easy Sherm. Quit now.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

GoGoBears why haven’t you figured out yet how badly you have been played?

    The MoreNCsarecoming on BI was not me but another poster;

    The different names on scout (KyleBollerFan, MebaneDT8, etc) was still another poster who I traded sign in with just so that we could play you;

    The many names on SF Gate where originally some of mine but I gave them to another poster who played you;

And you would be shocked who at least one of those posters WAS. He played you too!!!!

And do you know why? It is because he told me that no one who has a position like you should be allowed to act as mean and abrasive as you do. Plus he said you had Anger Management problems (remember that sign in)?

You have provided some great entertainment over the years. At least 4 of us have received guilty pleasure. Thanks.

  • Picard

Good work, GoGoBears. You really did get under moron’s skin.

  • HeteroscedasticBear

Sark could be held accountable if the allegations against Lupoi are true and if he doesn’t prove his case.

  • BlueNGold

moron, if you could actually play rugby, perhaps your obviously biased opinions could be given at least a bit of serious consideration. As it is, you are so obvious in your hatred and refusal to acknowledge that Cal might have actually accomplished anything in the sport, make your droning ‘its a club sport’ screed predictable, boring and revealing of your blatant hatred.

  • BlueNGold

moron are you sure you wanted to post all that stuff? It pretty much confirms how obsessive you have been over the last 11+ years in stalking Cal fans and trolling this and other Cal sports blogs. You just admitted what I have been saying all along. You are in serious shape and need professional help. Deal with it, bro.

  • wehofx

twitter: johnny ragin is transferring. sux. (for whatever it’s worth, tweets suggesting he’s leaving because of illness in family.)

I had high hopes for him. He’s a hitter – in high school. kinda surprised he didn’t get more pt.

    Best of luck, Mr. Ragin.

  • Woj

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz on the new recruits. #3 ranked class in Pac12?! – Oh Stormy you must be taking truth telling lessons from Obama.

Misleading article couple of days ago by Farudo – Dykes was actually paid infinity $$$ for every FBS win he coached. Since his # of wins over FBS schools in 2013 was ZERO/ZILCH/NADA that’s $1,800,000 / 0 or 2nd worst in the country. This guy is literally robbing the Cal bank purporting as its coach.

Darn you Purdue – your lone squeaker win was over an FCS team too (Indiana St.) Same type of cupcake Cal beat by a TD. And its coach is paid $2,000,000 – Dykes and the boilers’ coach must have attended the same ‘coaching’ seminar.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

HAHAHAHA look at us killing Fresno State.

Who is our DC who is putting pressure on Carr a potential 1st round draft pick making look like a high school QB.

  • Dan

Moron/Woj – You call SC “us”. Did you go there? What is your affiliation or reason for calling SC “us”? We’re all waiting with baited breath.
