FINAL SCORE: Cal 88, Oregon State 83. The Bears (12-4, 3-0) have opened the conference schedule with three road victories for the first time since the 1938-39 season. Cobbs finished with 20 points — all in the second half — and nine assists. For the weekend, he had 40 points and 20 assists. Powers finished with 14 points, took two charges and made two free throws with 29.6 seconds left to help ice the win after the Bears had missed five of six. Wallace had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists, Kravish scored 16 and Solomon 15. Nelson had 26 points and Angus Brandt 22 for OSU (9-7, 1-3).
1:43 2nd H: A putback dunk by Solomon gave the Bears a 79-70 lead with 2:20 left but Angus Brandt answered with a layup for OSU and it’s 79-72. Cobbs, scoreless in the first half, has 18 points to go with nine assists. Kravish has 16, Solomon 14, Wallace 13 and Powers 12.
8:11 2nd H: Cal on a 10-0 run, fueled by two 3-pointers from Jeff Powers, and leads 70-61. Cobbs has 13 second-half points and nine assists for the game. Wallace has 13 points, six rebounds and six assists.
12:49 2nd H: It took the Bears less than 6 minutes to erase a 10-point halftime hole. Wallace’s putback of his own missed FT gave Cal a 53-52 lead with 14:09 left. But OSU answered with two FTs by Nelson and a 3-pointer from freshman Hallice Cook. OSU leads 57-53.
15:43 2nd H: Signs of life for the Bears. Cal used a 6-0 run to get within 48-45 when Wallace scored on a transition drive with 16:27 left. Preceding that, Kravish hit a pair of baskets. He’s got 16. It’s now 50-47 after a drive to the hoop by Cobbs.
HALFTIME SCORE: Oregon State 45, Cal 35. The Beavers had a 14-point lead with just 1 minute left, but the Bears outscored them 6-2 over the final 46 seconds of the half to get within 10. Solomon and Kravish have 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bears. But Cobbs (0 for 4) and Mathews (1 for 6) can’t find the basket. OSU shooting 63 percent and outrebounding Cal 19-12. Nelson has 13 for the Beavers.
2:39 1st H: A rebound dunk by Solomon and steal and layup by Mathews sandwiched around an OSU basket and Cal has cut the margin to 36-25. Cal has missed its past five FTs.
4:53 1st H: Back-to-back 3-pointers by Nelson provide the Beavers with a 34-21 lead and prompt a Montgomery timeout. OSU is 6 for 7 from beyond the arc. Cal may have to abandon its zone defense.
7:56 1st H: OSU has its biggest lead at 26-17 after a basket by Roberto Nelson. OSU shooting 61.1 percent to 42.1 percent for Cal, and the Beavers have a 13-7 rebounding edge. Cobbs and Mathews a combined 0 for 7 from the field. Monty has put Mathews back in, and is giving Jeff Powers a look. Cal struggling to crack OSU’s zone.
11:56 1st H: Angus Brandt has seven points and OSU leads 18-13. Beavers are shooting 7 for the 12. Jordan Mathews, who scored 32 pts Thursday in a win at Oregon, came out at 12:33 after missing his first four FGAs. The Bears have only sporadic rhythm against the OSU zone.
14:34 1st H: Oregon State jumps out to a 14-11 lead on the strength of four 3-point baskets by four different players. Cobbs has three assists for the Bears, who must tighten their perimeter defense.
