Football: Koa Farmer flips to Penn State

Safety/OLB Koa Farmer has decommitted from Cal and will sign with Penn State, he announced via his Instagram account. Rivals.com also reported that Farmer has flipped.

Farmer, a 6-foot-1, 205-pounder from Notre Dame HS in Sherman Oaks, is rated as a 3-star prospect by Scout.com and a 4-star by Rivals.com.

In either case, he was one of coach Sonny Dykes’ top oral commits and his change of heart would be a huge loss for the Bears.

Commitments cannot become binding until Feb. 5, national signing day.

Well, Sonny did say that we should end up with a top 3 recruiting class in the pac-12. Now given this news, either Sonny knows something we don’t know (a flurry of 4* commits lining up to ink with Cal) or he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Gentlemen, I’m hoping it’s the former, but my gut tells me it’s the latter.

Still hoping (it’s been hard these days). I love my Golden Bears!

    Go Bears!

  • Juancho

Its weird that we recruit better in Texas than California. I think Sonny may have made a recruiting mistake not keeping some of the old staff. Or if not them looking for strong long time california recruiters.

  • HeteroscedasticBear

Koa, don’t go! It’s cold up there! It’s in the 70s here (in January)!

  • Eric

This one I just don’t understand. By all accounts koa and his family viewed Cal as a home run because of the academics. Even when he was looking elsewhere one saw an academic angle. But Penn state? Must have been the bandy coach who left to go there (if I am remembering correctly).

  • Juancho

    Maybe he flips back.

  • Wehofx

    Damn! Sucks!

Cut back on btb and twitter after my obsessive behavior on dc announcement. I also know as we get closer to loi, I’ll go nuts again.

Re: koa, ya I thought academics was very important to him. If he flipped to vandy, I’d be unhappy but I’d understand.

But psu? IMO even penn isn’t as good as cal and it’s ivy.

It’s early days and as koa proved 18yo kids are fickle but if the class ends up close to what’s expected, this class will be way, way better than expected, esp if just two of the 4 stars on ov this weekend flip

…and that’s why I never get too excited until AFTER signing day.

  • Larry

I wonder if Farmer talked with Fortt about Penn State and Cal?

  • Juancho

I see your point. But after that all we have left is the ACTUAL FOOTBALL part. And thats been awful. Ive honestly had more fun following recruiting since the season ended, than i did watching the games all year. Thanks in large part to the incrediBUH blowouts.

  • Rollonubears

Maybe he doesn’t realize that penn and penn state are different. Maybe fortt told him to run for the hills. Penn state has a pretty sweet campus but the academics there are pretty bad. Not a wise choice.

  • Juancho

To be perfectly honest if i thought i was a future nfl guy. And if that was my goal. Academic prestige would be a nice to have. And not something i would care that much about.

Same way because academics were my main goal, sports for Cal were a nice to have.

I think sometimes were biased about academics because were nerds.

  • AngrySocialWelfareAdvisor

Don’t blame the kid. Why come to a school when it ranks dead last in the conference in both academics and football.

  • althebear

I believe South Central State is last in academics.

    Dear Cal Fans and Alums,

Yet again I offer my most sincere apologies.

    Can I describe my conundrum?

I toil at the coalface, working long hours in order to bring home the bacon and to provide a comfortable living for my family.

I arrive home, usually in the deepest hours of the night. I am greeted by the glow of a flat screen monitor emanating from behind a locked door to the basement. Outside the door are empty bags of Cheetos and discarded bottles of Mountain Dew. From behind that door comes forth a blizzard of “HAHAHAHA” and “LOL,” leading me to think I have a mental health patient residing in the bowels of my house.

I asked the police how I should handle this matter. They told me, “Daddy, this is civil issue. Besides she’s an adult. Have you thought about pulling the plug on her computer and getting an eviction order?”

24/7. 365. Holidays included. It never ends.

Every now and then, she shrieks, “I HATE Paul Dee!” I often get a call or e-mail from some such site like WeAreSC, telling me that they have banned her. It makes no sense to me, as I could care less about that lesser institution of learning or any other institution but the finest one in the land, the University of California.

My psychologist is currently using her as a case study, as it is a level of dysfunctional behavior that he has never encountered in all of his years of practice and research. I dread to think about the findings and conclusions.

I’d like to think that I put forth my best effort in raising She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. I taught her to sing “Hail To California” but she sings off key. I tried to get her into Cal, but the College of Natural Resources wouldn’t even accept her.

Sigh. Where did I go wrong? I remain humbly contrite and apologetic.

Best Regards, Go Bears, and Happy New Year,

It looks like Ricky Town is ours. You guys enjoy Goff and all of those other joke recruits and we will enjoy #2 rated QB in the nation.

  • IAmAlcindor

Maybe he will do as well for you as the bible thumping child you said would lead $C. Where is Barkley now?

  • IAmAlcindor

And it’s so nice that you finally embrace $C again. Will you ever discuss the fact that when SC was losing badly prior to having the coach fired, that you refused to mention SC and refused to indicate you were aligned with them? Fair Weather Troll.

  • Eric

Barkley is where the typical U$C QB ends up – either permanent bench riding until release (Barkley), a laughingstock (Butt Fumble), or an overpaid also-ran (Palmer).
While Cal has not had the same number of QBs make it to the NFL, I am pretty sure any NFL team would gladly trade every single one of these busts, plus years of first round draft picks, to get Rodgers.

  • AngrySocialWelfareAdvisor

With Eagles in the NFL. May I ask where is Zach Maynard your skateboarding Social Welfare major flunky?
