Football: Bears get commit from Petaluma OLB

Cal got a commitment Sunday from John Porchivina, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound outside linebacker from Casa Grande HS in Petaluma, according to both Scout.com and Rivals.com.

Porchivina, rated by both recruiting websites as a two-star prospect, originally committed last month to Fresno State but flipped to Cal.

Porchivina may turn out to be a splendid player, but the math is bad. On Saturday, the Bears lost OLB/safety Koa Farmer — a 3- or 4-star prospect — to Penn State. A day later, they replace him with a consensus 2-star player.

Jeff, here’s a little lemon for our wounds.

Porchivina committed as a Running Back for Cal. Where we are already in pretty good shape with Enwere and Watson. This better not be because the staff feels there is bad news on the Watson front coming.

would it surprise u if he ended up at ucla, which is having a big year and looks to be a consistent top 20 team under Mora. I am sure most of us never did believe Dykes statement about landing a top three class in the conference, but after the recent JC signs, Rivals has rated number 10 in the conference still and barely holding above UW. Ratings of course are not everything, the other challenge is coaching the kids into better players once you sign them. Dykes and Co need to get better results out of what they have next season if they want to get on radar screen with the top high school players.

Pretty small for a linebacker. May have to beef up some.

Sometimes we line up 2-3 guys in the backfield. Last year the up guys were mostly slow backup tight ends. This guy can help in those situations.

GB49, Porchivina signed as a running back for us. Maybe that’s what flipped him from Fresno.
