Basketball: ASU game thread

Click here to read my game story. And here for the box score

FINAL SCORE: Arizona State 89, Cal 78 OT. Carson scored 12 of his 29 points in overtime after the Bears rallied all the way back from a 16-point deficit to take the lead. Cobbs put the Bears in front with his drive to the basket with 44 seconds left and two FTs by Kravish made it 72-69 with 25.2 seconds left. But Jermaine Marshall used a screen to get free and sank a long 3-pointer with 17.7 seconds left to tie. Cobbs missed a jumper before the second-half horn sounded. Cal lost for the third straight time and fell to 14-7, 5-3 in the Pac-12.

10:21 2nd H: Cal within 57-50 after jumper by Kravish, who has 12 points on 6 for 8 from the field. Wallace, who had two points at halftime, has 15. Solomon has 12 rebounds.

14:21 2nd H: ASU’s lead reached 48-32 with 16:21 left, but Cal answered with a 12-3 run capped by a jumper by Kravish that made it 51-45 with 15:25 left. ASU now leads  53-44.

HALFTIME SCORE: Arizona State 42, Cal 30. Carson had 11 points and five assists, but he wasn’t the only ASU player who hurt Cal with quickness and penetration. Jermaine Marshall has nine points. Cobbs with 11 points for the Bears. Solomon has seven rebounds and five assists. ASU scored 13 points off seven Cal turnovers. The Sun Devils shot 5 for 10 from the 3-point arc, Cal 1 for 5. The Bears also missed five FTs.

2:09 1st H: Carson now has five assists, but the real upset is that so does Solomon. That’s a career-high. But ASU leads 38-29. Carson’s quickness driving the Bears nuts. Cobbs has 10 points and Kravish has scored three of Cal’s past four hoops.

4:32 1st H: This Carson dude is a problem for the Bears. Has 11 points on 5 for 7 from the field and ASU is up 30-23. Jacobsen with three fouls for the Sun Devils.

6:32 1st H: Carson has nine points and three assists and ASU leads 26-19. Cobbs has six points for Cal and Bird showing signs of coming to life with a pair of baskets.

8:32 1st H: Cobbs just hit a jumper and Cal is down 20-14. Carson and Cobbs each playing with two PFs.

11:35 1st H: The Sun Devils stretched their lead out to 17-7, but Cal has scored the past five points to pull within 17-12 after Wallace made a free throw, Solomon rebounded the missed second attempt and Jabari Bird converted a mid-range jumper. Cobbs on the bench with two fouls. Cal using a very unusual lineup: Solomon, Jeff Powers, Wallace, Bird and Sam Singer. Monty looking for defenders who can find ASU’s shooters.

14:53 1st H: ASU out to 11-5 lead, despite the fact that 7-ft-2 center Jordan Bachynski picked up two fouls in the opening 73 seconds and is on the bench.  ASU shooting 5 for 7 from the field. Cal just 2 for 5.

STARTING LINEUPS: Cal will go with Richard Solomon, David Kravish, Tyrone Wallace, Jordan Mathews and Justin Cobbs. ASU is starting Jordan Bachynski, Eric Jacobsen, Jermaine Marshall, Shauuielle McKissick, and Jahii Carson.

WELCOME: Back here at Haas Pavilion as the Bears (14-6, 5-2) try to snap their two-game losing skid with a matchup vs. Arizona State 15-5, 4-3).

Will be back with starting lineups.

    C’mon Bears!

  • 707 Bear

    Hey Larry Scott

The PAC 12 Network has some volleyball game between USC and CBU with 10 people in the stands.

I’m on my couch and want to watch the Cal v AZ State game.

    I don’t get ESPN U.

I thought you sold the soul of the PAC 12 so we could see more hoops games from Wednesday to Sunday.

    What gives?

  • 1brsfan

Bears made a nice little run but have gone cold. Cobbs is having an off night. Our tourney hopes are quickly dwindling!

  • JB Don’t Dance

    Did Behrens play tonight?

  • 1brsfan

Had the game in regulation. Didn’t like the last shot by Cobbs. He should have driven to basket. Blew it. Free throw shooting was horrible, especially Solomon.

  • 707 Bear

Well, the good news is Haas is sold out for Saturday night.

When was the last sell out (no, not Larry Scott) at Haas?

    Go Bears

  • Paul E Moore IV

Playing ourselves out of the Tourney. Troubling loss with #1 Zona looming on heals of getting swept in LA. Really wish Cobbs had started that drive earlier and Wallace needed to be there quicker to help on that 3. Bird needs to score again too, like he showed a glimpse of last game and still waiting for Ricky. Good to see Wallace reemerge but too late. Where was he in the first half? We have the talent. Get it back together Bears. I like this squad. GO BEARS!

  • Paul E Moore IV

I didn’t notice him. If he did, not much. Check the box score.

  • Juancho

The bad news is it will be 50% arizona fans.

  • Juancho

Cal sports are cursed. This type of up and downs has been going on my entire life.

  • Eric

Now we have given away the road win at Oregon. Starting to get worried about the six wins we need. Team is showing lack of maturity. This is how many games in a row we have had a terribly slow start?

  • 1brsfan

It gets tougher and tougher each year. Is this worse than just sucking and knowing you’re not going dancing?

  • 707 Bear

    Juancho,

As the leader of this blog, I must insist on a message of positivity.

Let’s channel our inner Joe Kapp and shout, “The Bear will not quit, the Bear will not die.”

Mid ’80s flashback is over. Pass the Bartles and Jaymes.

  • Dan

At some point, you have to start to question Montgomery. He either has recruited the wrong players, not enough of the right players, or he hasn’t developed them enough.

ASU is NOT that good, you just cant lose to them at home. You can’t. Combine that with loss to the horrible Trojans, and this team is sinking out of sight. You really needed this game with UofA coming in.

Juancho, you’re right, being a Cal fan is fraught with so much disappointment, under achievement, and flat out mediocrity.

  • Dan

Hey Eric and Juancho- never got a chance – until now- to thank you both for your well wishes and kind words about the Aztecs. Very much appreciated. It’s been quite a season so far. I’m all fingers crossed and stressed out that the Aztecs can keep this thing going as long as possible. And I’m quite enjoying it, make that savoring it, too.

Up to #5 in both polls, only the 2nd time in school history ranked this high. The other was 3 years ago with the Kawhi Leonard-Malcolm Thomas-DJ Gay-Billy Owens-Chase Tapley-James Rahon-Jamaal Franklin-Brian Carlwell team -enough bragging, but there a sliver of optimism for Golden Bears in this.

Being an Aztec for over 30 years has been as painful or more so than living and dying with Cal football and basketball. All its takes is the right coach, a committed administration, a smart leader of an AD. Cal has it all otherwise. I am thankful every day for Steve Fisher at SDSU, let’s hope we see someone that good as a Cal head coach in either sport here before we are all too old.

  • Steve Fischer

I’ve often questioned Montgomery but usually give him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think he is a great coach. His teams here have often choked and these three consecutive losses are inexcusable. He is way past his prime however he does look competent compared to Dykes so far.

  • Rollonubears

I thought the free throw shooting would kill us. Free points! Why would you not do everything you can to get better in that department? They should be automatic for kids by the time they get to this level. I’m not a fan of Monty’s coaching in the final seconds of halves. We have a penchant for letting games slip away there, although this year, end-of-first-half last-second-possessions have been a lot better than prior years. I didn’t get to watch the game as it was on way too late (east coast), but at least they came all the way back. If we beat AZ, all will be right with the world. We just might.

  • AngrySocialWelfareAdvisor

Eddie House…google the stats on his game as an ASU player against you guys.

  • BlakeStreetBear

Really frustrating game. I thought great, Bazhinski (or whatever) had two fouls in the first 4 minutes, now its time to post up Kravish and Solomon and do the inside-outside thing for the rest of the half. NO. The Bears were content to dribble drive all night and force some shoddy shots. It was like every time a player received a pass he stood there with the ball for a second looking around before doing anything. You gotta know what you are doing BEFORE you receive the pass: either pass, shoot or triple threat your defender, but do SOMETHING. Way too much standing around.

Not sure what has happened over the last couple of weeks but it is not good – no energy. Not sure what the heck the coaches were thinking last night either. When their only interior defender is outta the game you gotta take advantage. The coaches did not do their job in adjusting the game plan once the big guy sat down. Where were the post-ups???

And the open layup by Cobbs that got stuck on the rim was incredibly portentous. WTF happened there? ARRRGGGHHH!!

    ok, breathe, breathe… ;)

If we beat ua saturday ALL these ugly losses will be forgotten, almost…

    Go Bears!

Eddie House’s Wiki page – “He wanted to play for University of California, Berkeley, but coaches of that school felt that House wasn’t ready for a major college basketball program, and recommended that House begin at a junior college.”

House set a single-game Arizona State record with a 61-point effort in a 111–108 double-overtime victory against the California Golden Bears on the road in his senior season. It also was a memorable homecoming of sorts for him, as he had starred in high school for nearby Hayward High School. House also set a record in the game with 18 made free throws in 19 attempts.

  • AngrySocialWelfareAdvisor

Eddie House’s 61 points which he scored against UC East Bay on January 8, 2000 tied the single game scoring record for Pac 10 players. The last and only other one to do it was Lew Alcindor.

  • Paul E Moore IV

Although, I actually like this post because I like Eddie House but I don’t see the need for you to always criticize and bash just to try to bother people. It’s unhealthy.

The failure to instill the faith among the heathen has never had such dire consequences. Locked in the basement. Home alone. Saddled with a degree from a lower institution. Such despair!

Go with Christ! Cast out the sinners. Let sanctions be your salvation. Hallelujah!

Dan my brother you know i get a sense of joy when i see the aztecs doing well because of our friendship here over the years.

  • Juancho

Brother Paul. Your father sounds like a great man. And im also someone who has had cancer affect their parents. Go bears.

If we make the rose bowl one day i will be buried in rose bowl gear.

  • Juancho

707 i agree with you. As you know the greatness of Cal is outside of sports.

But man. Year after year its hard times. But to this day i wear cal gear and advocate gor the blue n gold in the community.

I wear a cal polo every friday to work. A tradition i picked up. And me and my 8th grade team probably help cal baseball stay afloat with our support.

That’s why invented the word “typicalCal” — just when things start breaking out way Cal breaks your heart.

  • Dan

That’s very nice Juancho. I truly appreciate it.

There have been many, many barren years as an Aztec. Oh who am I kidding? More like lean decades. Could I have picked 2 more Universities with more sports frustration? Sometimes you just have to laugh.

Let me show you the way.

Only 1 offensive rebound during the first half with Bachynski out. Four total. That was tough.

Thanks Juancho. I am formerly Wyoming Bear but I was having problems with getting posts up. It always said…”waiting for moderator…” or something like that. I no longer live in WY. Back in CA. Nice to been able to go to some games at Haas this season. Go BEARS! Great win.
Let’s “back it up” as Monty “suggested” to the team.
