Football: Bears to sign a second QB prospect

After getting commitments from four defensive players the previous three days, Cal pulled a minor surprise by landing its second quarterback prospect, the Los Angeles Times first reported.

Chase Forrest, who led Mater Dei-Santa Ana to an 11-3 record and into the championship game of the Pac-5 Division, committed to the Bears after Cal made an in-home visit Tuesday night.

Forrest is the 20th player to commit to the Bears, including five who signed at mid-year, and the second quarterback. Also expected to make his commitment official on signing day next Wednesday is Luke Rubenzer of Saguaro High in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Forrest, 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, threw three touchdown passes in Mater Dei’s 30-0 win over Long Beach Poly in the Pac-5 semifinals. Rated a two-star prospect by Scout.com and Rivals.com, he is regarded as a passer/runner, as is Rubenzer.

“With his running ability and their offense and his live arm, they got a good quarterback,” Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson told the Los Angeles Times.

According to MaxPreps, Forrest passed for 2,001 yards and 14 touchdowns this season.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Rubenzer, a three-star prospect, passed for more than 4,200 yards with 61 TDs this season, and also ran for more than 1,000 yards.

Huh? I guess we’re thin at QB.

  • JB Don’t Dance

Athlete? Backup QB better suited to Bear Raid?

  • Juancho

Everyone remember when I said the new staff was going to focus on running quarterbacks? And some brothers disagreed. I think this is one of the rate times Juancho was right.

Say goodbye to the pro-style qb at Cal. It looks like a running qb is going to be instrumental in Dykes and co. taking this team to that next level we all are ready for.

  • HeteroscedasticBear

Hey Jauncho, it looks like he has good credentials. Why do you think he’s only a 2* and Cal is his only major offer?

  • Juancho

Hetero im not too sure. Ill have to research it. From what i understand he just got attention recently. I believe vanderbilt just offered him too.

  • Eric

I don’t know much about him, but Mater Dei did very well in the Pac-5 playoffs – by far the most competitive high school conference in the country.

  • rotfogel

Rubenzer is no joke though. I’ve seen his tape and I suggest you do the same. He’s legit. The only reason he’s a three star recruit instead of five stars is his height. That kid’s tape jumps out at you. He’ll be a special player for the Bears.

  • Juancho

In general running qbs arent rated as highly as pro style guys. Rarely is a running qb rated 4 or 5 stars. Its a bias in the traditional rating system that weighs arm strength too heavily.

A dual threat qb doesnt need that arm strength when theyre operating the dink dunkery 75% of the time.

  • eastcoastbear

Watson the best running back qb this year is rated 5 stars (clemson) and quite a few four and three stars (Rubenzer one of them) out there. But never hurts to take a flyer on a QB with size …We had a a list of Elite 11 QBs and none have rally been as good as the HS Hype…Verdict still out on Geoff..

  • rotfogel

But man, Rubenzer has a cannon AND he can run. He really looks special…check out his eye popping senior numbers, they’re ridiculous.

  • Larry

An extra arm never hurts. Rubenzer may get playing time as a true FR, need next guy up the next season when Rubenzer grads or goes to the NFL.

  • Calduke

    SoCal here;
Forget about Shane’s stars, stats, etc. The important info is that he played at Mater Dei. They are a football factory and making that team you have to be a baller.
They actually recruit and usually get the right guys to
‘move or ‘transfer’. The player competition is big time and they play one of the toughest schedules year after year. When a recruit leaves Mater Dei, he is ready and knows how to win.
Getting Shane, Watson and Brown is a big step in making inroads on UCLA, USC,AU and ASU terrain.
If Forrest, Watson and Brown play the others will come. Brown is a Cal commit(for now) because of the success of another Fontana grad.
Watson is from Corona Centennial, another factory, and his success would be a big plus in recruiting in SoCal
If Shane and Luke are at Cal in 2015 there will be a huge QB controversy. Goff will be listed 3rd on the depth chart.

    Welcome to Cal,Mr Forrest.

4 scolly qb’s is common/prudent esp since goff couldn’t play all 12. Look at him as zk’s replacement on depth chart. Hinder will be Sr.

Rubenzer looks like the real deal but competition is always good.

It’s also good news that sd and co are establishing Bosco and Mater Dei pipe lines. Offering a scholly to marginal PAC 12 player mater Dei Hc really likes is worth it just in good will created.

Finally, from what I’ve read, we’re at the top of 2015 5 star qb josh Rosen’s list of schools

  • Wehofx

Twitter rumor for whatever/little it’s worth:

NCAA cleared the ‘ho. Seems true.

SD is talking to him about coaching. Wtf?

I don’t know what to think. Probably just hype.

  • Eric

Calduke is spot on describing the benefits of recruiting Mater Dei, which has been a U$C pipeline school. Now, if we can only get into Serra…

  • Wehofx

    JF tweet:

@JeffFaraudo: You are hearing a crazy rumor and I can tell you it is NOT true. My info from a very good source.

  • AngrySocialWelfareAdvisor

My sources down south told me he was the weakest MDHS QB to come thru that program in 20 years.
    Ricky Town…remember that name.

  • sunshipballoons

No doubt, pro-style QB isn’t for Dykes. But it’s not like he’s a “running QB” guy either. He needs a guy who is mobile i the pocket. Think Texas Tech back in the Holiday Bowl the year Mack Brown cheated Cal out of a BCS birth. That’s the offense Dykes wants.

  • Paul E Moore IV

    Who is the ‘ho? Lupoi?

  • GoBears49

Rubenzer does have an arm and other running QB’s do too. Manziel is one of them. Robert Griffin, the Redskins QB, is another. Kaepernick doesn’t have a cannon for an arm (but it is clearly good enough, but it is his running ability that makes him special. A running QB can make a “perfect” defensive execution look foolish.

  • covinared

funny how many assume Rubenzer will soon take over. was not that the accepted truth a few years back for a guy named Kline? We have a good qb coming back. unless he gets hurt, these new guys will wait.

  • Juancho

    Its franklin not dykes.

  • Steve W

I watched young Forest and his MD team lose to John Bosco in the HS playoffs and came away about as impressed as I was with Alan Bridgford after watching him in a prep game several years ago.Translated, that means he will wearing a baseball cap and carrying a clipboard his entire career at Cal. Good for him, but I would rather see that scholarship go to an impact player.

  • Eric

Exactly. Absent injury, Goff will start the next two years (three if he doesn’t leave for the NFL).

  • AngrySocialWelfareAdvisor

Let’s start a “When Will Goff Transfer” poll. I say the latest is after the 2014 season and the earliest is when he gets beat during Spring ball.

  • Gobears49

I think Goff will start, at least next year. Rubenzer has too much to learn about the system, unless he pulls a Kline and shows up early, at spring practice. But I think the next year if will be war for QB. Goff better learn how to run better. As for Forest, I’m from SoCal and I agree Mater Dei is a football factory, so at least he comes from a very sophisticated football program. But don’t know anything about him.

Orange County, where Mater Dei is located, has historically, almost like the south in terms of being fanatical about football. Catholic schools recruit and Mater Dei must be close to the top of the list in recruiting in Caifornia. De La Salle must be up there, too.

  • sunshipballoons

What does this have to do with Cal’s swim team? Just kidding. But it’s absurd to think that Dykes, who came up under Hal Mumme, then coached with Mike Leach at Texas Tech, then was the OC for the Arizona Air Raid under Mike Stoops, isn’t a significant driving factor in running the Air Raid.

  • rotfogel

that’s true, I got carried away with Kline a bit. He did show a really nice arm, but his accuracy and decision making left a lot to be desired. That said, after watching a lot of Rubenzer’s tape, it’s hard not to be blown away by how special that kid is. He’s fast and just seems to have a will to do something special. And not to mention his numbers, Wowsers! He’s senior season numbers are insane, none of the Cal QBs had that successful a senior season except for Kyle Boller.

  • rotfogel

I saw Ricky Town, he’s cool, Rubenzer is a lot better though.

  • Gobears49

Let’s start a poll to determine when Sark will get fired from USC when it is discovered he was a part of the Lupoi payment for tuition scandal.
