Football: Rubenzer inspired by Russell Wilson

Cal signee Luke Rubenzer has a new, two-word response whenever someone suggests he’s too short to play quarterback: Russell Wilson.

Rubenzer, listed at 6 feet, was out and about in his hometown of Scottsdale, Ariz., earlier this week when someone questioned his physical qualifications to play the position.

“I almost said, ‘Did you watch the Super Bowl?'” he said. “I’ll probably use that next time.”

Rubenzer, who made his commitment to Cal official on Wednesday, is modestly rated as a three-star prospect by most recruiting services. He knows the scouts graded him down because he’s not the prototype quarterback at 6-4.

Wilson, the former Wisconsin star who led the Seattle Seahawks to victory Sunday in the Super Bowl, is Rubenzer’s response to the stereotype.

“It’s really cool a guy like that, who is actually shorter than I am, having a big game in the Super Bowl,” Rubenzer said.

I absolutely love watching his highlights from his jr & sr seasons! His hero is Manziel & his game looks very similar. The ONLY reason he wasn’t ranked higher was that he’s 6′ tall! That. Is. It. In ’13 he passed for 4,000+ (including 540+ yards & 9 TDs in state semi win), with 60, yes SIXTY, TDs, ran for 1200+ yards with another 10 TDs. He threw 3 picks in the 1st game & ZERO for the rest of the season. He also finished 8th in the E11. It really bugs the crap out of me seeing QBs ranked ahead of him because they’re taller than him. GTFOH! Height hasn’t hurt Brees, Wilson & Manziel. The kid has heart & game to back it. He & Enwere are already a couple of my favorite recruits of all time.

Unfortunately, seeing over your oline is important at this level, and they’re all taller. I’m really excited to see what he can do though.

Actually seeing around them works too

Rubenzer is probably not as tall as 6 foot. Probably an inch or so under that. I don’t care. The Super Bowl was just another example of how a running, elusive QB, who can throw, is much better, on average, than a pure pro-style QB. Wilson eluded several rushes that Manning never would have been able to, and then was able to pass on the run.

Goff had better start practicing, including practicing eluding the rush.

Well at least according to Rubenzer he is taller than Russell Wilson. He does look 6 foot though, I don’t think he’s under.
