Football: Signing day thread

DE Kennedy Emesibe of Oaks Hills HS has signed, meaning the Bears landed all 15 players on Wednesday who previously had committed to them. Unless there is a late surprise — and you never know — Cal looks to be done.

Here are the current Pac-12 team rankings from Scout.com and Rivals.com:

Scout: 12. Stanford; 14. ASU; 19. UCLA; 21. Arizona; 23. Oregon; 30. USC; 38. UW; 43. Cal; 47. OSU; 59. WSU; 71. Utah; 72. Colorado.

Rivals: 13. Stanford; 16. UCLA; 19. ASU; 24. USC; 27. Arizona; 30. Oregon; 39. UW; 45. Cal; 52. OSU; 63. Colorado; 67. WSU; 72. Utah.

Still awaiting word on DE Kennedy Emesibe of Oak Hills HS. Otherwise, the Bears have signed paperwork from each of the remaining 15 prospects they anticipated signing today. Word is an offer has gone out to one more player. Will keep you posted.

*****

Nifae Lealao, the 4-star DE from Capital Christian-Sacramento, fooled no one when he lined up four hats — including Cal, but not Vanderbilt — on a table in front of him as he made his college announcement. The 6-foot-6, 290-pounder chose Vandy, whose new HC Derek Mason, recruited him for Stanford last fall.

*****

We’re not sure why Saf Sam Atoe of College of San Mateo — a mid-year signee — is not listed with Cal’s other signees on its website. An oversight or a hint that he is not enrolled in school after all? We’ll find out at Sonny Dykes’ signing day news conference this afternoon. Update: Atoe had paperwork that needed finishing; his signing is now complete and official.

*****

O-line coach Zach Yenser tweets that 6-5, 270-pound OT Dominic Granado of Golden West JC is signed. Yenser: “You are what we want to build this unit around. #Nasty #Athletic #smart”

*****

Both QBs now on board as Chase Forrest of Mater Dei makes it official. Forrest committed in recent weeks, joining Scottsdale’s Luke Rubenzer. Bears may not have pursued two QBs until Zach Kline transferred. Plus, he’s from a great program and coaching staff now has a connection there.

*****

Apparently headed to Northwestern until Tuesday night, 3-star OLB Hamilton Anoa’i of Serra-San Mateo made his flip to Cal official by signing with the Bears. He joins DE Noah Westerfield as defectors from the Big Ten school the Bears will face in their 2014 season opener.

*****

Another one of the seven players Cal’s coaches flipped from an earlier choice is officially on board: Aisea Tongilava, a 3-star OLB from Lutheran HS in Orange. That’s 12 down.

*****

Tre Watson had given no indication he planned to go anywhere else — including Washington — but that didn’t mean folks weren’t a bit anxious. Watson, the 3-star RB from Centennial-Corona, made it official. He has signed with Cal. This guy is the definition of production: Gained more than 3,400 rushing yards with 48 touchdowns last fall.

*****

Cal gets a signed letter from its only WR in the class, 4-star Erik Brown of Fontana, a one-time UW commit. That’s 10 in the fold.

*****

Some big-time family genes at work here: Bears sign safety Quentin Tartabull of Mission Hills. His father (Danny) and grand-father (Jose) both played MLB. Dad hit 262 homers in the bigs. Quentin was a football man early on.

*****

The Bears didn’t fare well in their own backyard, but got this Bay Area prospect: Signed is OLB John Porchivina of Casa Grande-Petaluma. That’s eight.

*****

When all is done, Cal expects to have seven new players who flipped from their original oral commitment.

*****

Still no word from Capital Christian-Sacto 4-star DE Nifae Lealao, a longshot to sign with Bears after recent strong push from Vanderbilt.

*****

Bears officialy get a good one: MLB Chandler Leniu of St. John Bosco HS in Bellflower, submits his signed letter. Leniu once was a WSU commit. That’s 7.

*****

Arizona-bound DT Marcus Griffin tells Brandon Huffman of Scout: “I felt it was the best fit for me. This decision wasn’t really about football as much as academics. I wanted to be able to continue sign language while also having a degree from a top 10 business school.”

*****

The latest from Dykes via twitter: CB Darius White from Itawamba (Miss.) JC has signed. White is Cal’s sixth JC signee, five of them on defense. (The other five JCs signed at mid-year and will be on hand for spring ball). The Bears recognize their desperate need for immediate help on that side of the ball.

*****

I talked last night with new Cal QB Luke Rubenzer, who was excited to sign today and that a quarterback shorter than him — Russell Wilson — won the Super Bowl. Will have more from Rubenzer later.

*****

That’s five who have made it official so far. Cal had commits from 21 coming into today. Stay tuned.

*****

Seems like the out-of-state guys are up earlier. No surprise there. DE Noah Westerfield of Frisco, Texas, is the latest to official be on board with the Bears.

*****

Coach Sonny Dykes tweets that QB Luke Rubenzer of Scottsdale, Ariz., and RB Vic Enwere of Missouri City, Texas, have sent in their signed letters.

*****

O-line coach Zach Yenser tweeted the Bears have received signed letters from two of his guys: OG Kamryn Bennett of Peoria, Ariz., and C Michael Trani of La Mirada.

Signing day’s first piece of news wasn’t good for Cal, but wasn’t a huge surprise, either. Marcus Griffin, a four-star DT from Bellevue, Wash., announced he had picked Arizona over Cal and Mississippi State. Would have been a great pickup for the Bears.

  • Juancho

Remember when some folks criticized other schools for recruiting commits to other schools? That looks like a core part of dykes staff strategy. A lot of flips.

Im all for it. Its the recruiting biz 101.

  • Wehofx

    Watson. Yessss!

  • LA_Ed

Daddy doesn’t want you. Have you gotten Daddy into rehab yet?

  • HeteroscedasticBear

I think he said that Arizona is Top 10 in business!?!?! Maybe he’s thinking that UA has a top 10 business school in the state of Arizona. If he had done more research (if he were a better student), he would have discovered that Haas School of Business is top 10 in the nation. So if he that dumb then we don’t need him.
