Football: Jeff Tedford reacts to Ted Agu’s death

Both of Ted Agu’s head football coaches Cal felt profound sadness at the news the 21-year-old died on Friday.

Former Bears coach Jeff Tedford, now offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, called it “a pretty sad day, for sure.”

Agu arrived at Cal as a walkon when Tedford coached the Bears, and last spring was awarded a scholarship by current coach Sonny Dykes.

“You can’t respect or admire anyone more than him,” Tedford said of Agu. “He was such a driven, passionate guy. He came to Cal with a vision and a goal for academics and football.”

Tedford called Agu a great “team guy” who was admired by everyone on the team.

“He had a very rigorous academic schedule but he also wanted to compete a high level,” Tedford said. “He was going to prove his worth. It was mission accomplished 100 percent.

“Not only did he earn a scholarship, but along the way he gained the respect and admiration of his teammates, which is far more important than football. My heart goes out to the Agu family and the Cal players.”

CGB posted a poignant piece written by Trevor Guyton about Ted Agu. Definitely worth a read.

The administration is failing the Agu family by making them fundraise for the funeral.

WHY THE HELL HASNT THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM OR SANDY COME OUT AND SAID THEY WILL COVER ALL THE COSTS.

Making the family worry about the money? Is that what UC stands for? Because that is who it is as of today.

As an alumni I my brothers am ASHAMED.

I would not be surprised if the NCAA has rules against it. If so, Cal should make a statement and say they’re paying for it knowing its a violation and self report to the NCAA.

Always remember Ted Agu but the world goes on. # 35

    @UCBerkeley: #DYK If @UCBerkeley were a country, we would have ranked #6 in the world at the 2012 #Olympics. #Sochi2014 #GoBears http://t.co/LQDQ44yV6b

I spoke to Sandy Barbour today. She confirmed UC has received NCAA clearance and will cover all costs for the Agu family. I thank her for this.

    Great news!

A lot of us emailed and tweeted our feelings about Ted Agu’s funeral costs to sb and sd. I’m heartened they did the right thing. I think you have to give them credit for acting quickly.

Now the $ raised can be used as his family’s wishes. I’m hoping for a scholly in Ted’s name.

Per twitter exchange I had w nam le, I hope they make #35 a legacy number that is awarded to a Bear who is a STUDENT-Athlete like Ted.

(Obviously, if they choose to retire # that’s great, too.

β€œHe had a very rigorous academic schedule but he also wanted to compete a high level,” Tedford said.

It’s hard to read this and not wonder if Tedford means this as a criticism.
