Basketball: Yanni Hufnagel confirms hiring

Vanderbilt assistant coach Yanni Hufnagel confirmed to me in a text Sunday night that he has been hired to complete new Cal coach Cuonzo Martin’s staff.

The news was first reported by ESPN.com’s Jeff Goodman via twitter.

Hufnagel spent the past season at Vanderbilt, where he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Previously, he was at Harvarad for four seasons. He got his coaching start as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma, during which time he assisted in the development of Blake Griffin.

Hufnagel also worked a basketball operations intern with the New Jersey Nets during his time at a grad student at Oklahoma. He has an undergrad degree from Cornell.

Interesting credentials but we still need someone with YayArea ties.

  • Steve Fischer

I’d like to know which recruits he brought to those schools.

anyone who can say they worked with BG is fine by me…Got to improve on recruiting bigs at Cal to get to the next level. Sounds to me like coach Martin and his new team are on the right track.

Cal, like Harvard and Vandy, requires student athletes that not only want to get a good education, but can also compete easily in the classroom as well as on the court: California’s flagship University needs to set the example with Men’s B’ball and Men’s football APR that is equal to it’s world renowned status as the #1 Public University. So, great hire, all four of them.

It would be nice to know Coach Martin’s record in recruiting at Tennessee. Maybe I’ll look it up and report back. As I said before, given the number of scholarships we now have available, I think Martin should bring in some JC’s for some immediate help. Maybe he could tap into his midwest connections to do that. Maybe JC transfers are easier to convince to leave their home roots than freshmen are.

IF these guys are at Cal for the LONG HAUL, then the local recruiting ties will emerge soon enough and should flourish, like now.

I like the pedigrees, academic backgrounds seem to be prominent.

I am so dang curious as to who comprises the squad come next fall! We know of only 8 returnees and 1 incoming (7-1!!) freshman. Who will be the lucky 4 to join them?

Seems like a great hire. Coach Martin continues to impress.

Per twitter: Hufnagel already has solid Ca connections, ie a coupla players from Compton Magic gave hufnagel twitter shout outs on his joining Cal hoops.

I only read the first paragraph and I was sold:

Good things are coming…I hope everyone in the program, from AD to student-intern ankle-taper, is thinking big!

    Go Bears!

i like that he’s cool with blue socks

This guy seems like a great hire. The things I’ve read about him all say he is a star recruiter. So if that is true, and he does a good job, no more excuses on us missing out on all this talent we have in northern California.

  • sunshipballoons

Hopefully he wasn’t at OK for the Kelvin Sampson era at all. I’d hate Cal to have any coach at all associated with that guy.

  • sunshipballoons

Isn’t one of the problems that Cal doesn’t require that?
