Football: Brennan Scarlett will transfer . . . to Stanford?

I’m in Las Vegas for the WCC and Pac-12 basketball tournaments, but word from Berkeley is that senior defensive end Brennan Scarlett has been granted his release to transfer and likely is headed to Stanford.

Update: After Monday’s practice, coach Sonny Dykes confirmed to reporters that Scarlett has received his released and intends to transfer.

Scarlett,  who will graduate this spring, has one year of eligibility year and is expected to be able to play immediately next fall. He would join his brother, freshman-to-be running back Cameron Scarlett, a four-star recruit from Portland, Oregon.

Staff writer Jimmy Durkin is covering Cal’s first day of spring workouts Monday and he filed this report.

Well….at least we will count his graduation.

Hard to know what the heck is going on. Anyone remember two players in one year transferring for their senior seasons? Both on defense.

Cal’s defense is like my hair: gets thinner by the day.

Things continue to be weird in Berkeley. Someday someone on this team will write a book about these days, because something just can’t be right with these transfers year after year.

I think intra-conference transfers should still have to sit out a year, regardless of graduate status. This rule is stupid. Sorry, but if you sign up to play ball and then graduate, you are done, or you should be able to be a graduate player/assistant for a year and not go to class, then start grad school when your eligibility runs out, not both.

Watch Scarlett’s luck totally switch at furd and he plays the whole season injury-free. If that happens, I’m gonna go test the water up there at Memorial…and scrutinize the little rubber specs in the fake grass.

    Go Bears!

“Weird” goes by one name, my friend, “Dykes”. As soon as he and his crew are shown the door we’ll get back to normal and players will actually stay on the team because they *want* to, not because they *have* to. Seems that every time one of them graduates with eligibility and *can* leave, they *do* leave.

What’s THAT tell you about Sonny Dykes?

  • Pixilicious

STILL think Sonny is a great coach?? 80% loss record and players can’t wait to get out, as soon as they can.

At least we’re now making him a millionaire only 1.8 times over per year, rather than 2.4 times.

I think pixil is amy’s cousin? Now that expectations have returned to Berkeley (and the Cal blogs), the troll(s) most likely will too.

It’s not weird. He’d have to get into a grad program. If he’s graduating, he can’t play a 4th year and not go to school. If our athletes simply dropped out of school instead of graduating, we wouldn’t have this problem.

Scarlett was one of the guys recruited to play in a 3-4 defense that was out of place in the 4-3. I wish him well, even if he goes to Stanford. As it will likely turn out anyway, he’ll be hurt and out of action when its time for them to play us.

Pixi is moron/angry/amy by a new name. Give him time to show his true self. It will be obvious

Or maybe the transfers are guys who were recruited to play in a drastically different offense and defense? Oh wait, not maybe. That’s exactly what it was. Scarlett is a 3-4 OLB. He was a bad fit in the 4-3. And he wants to play with his brother. Oh, the horror!

  • sunshipballoons

I’m bored of hating stanford all year long. If Scarlett wants to play with his brother, I say go for it. And I’ll be happy for him if he can stay healthy and get on the field. And I’ll cheer every time Stanford looses this season, boo every time they win, and yell mean things at them at the big game in their little toy stadium.

Wow, we are losing one of the players from that terrible defensive squad? Great!!!
