Football: Monday practice update

One revelation at practice today was that quarterback Zach Maynard suffered a quad contusion early on against Oregon and played with it the rest of the game.

Coach Jeff Tedford implied it was a minor injury and not serious enough to remove him from the game. But wide receiver Keenan Allen, Maynard’s half-brother, said Maynard told him it did limit him to an extent.

Football: Cal-Utah not picked up by networks, will likely still be televised locally

Cal’s home game against Utah on Saturday, Oct. 22 was not selected by the television networks that have contracts with the Pac-12 today under the 12-day rule. Each week, there are games left open for the networks to choose from 12 days before it takes place in order for them to choose what they feel is the best matchup.

Oregon-Colorado and Washington State-Oregon State each were picked up by Fox Sports Net.

But Cal officials are working on having the game produced locally, most likely by Comcast SportsNet California. That announcement could come tomorrow.

Football: Monday quick hitters

  • Jeff Tedford said today that QB Zach Maynard played most of the Oregon game with a quad contusion. He said he suffered the injury early in the game. WR Keenan Allen said Maynard told him “he couldn’t throw off his foot.” But Tedford said he took Maynard out in the fourth quarter because he “got drilled and was kind of fuzzy.” But Tedford said he was considering putting backup Allan Bridgford in the game at that point anyway because of the situation.
  • TE Spencer Ladner returned to practice today. Ladner has been out all season after multiple knee surgeries. Tedford said Anthony Miller and Spencer Hagan will remain atop the depth chart, and they will work Ladner in when they can.
  • DE Trevor Guyton practiced today. He was held out yesterday with an undisclosed injury, but he appears to be OK.
  • CB Marc Anthony is still out with his shoulder injury. It’s looking pretty doubtful he will play against USC.

Football: Sunday practice update

The Bears put Oregon in the past and started preparing for USC this afternoon at Witter Rugby Field. With another Thursday game, Sunday was like Tuesday for Cal, meaning it was their most intense, hard-hitting practice of the week.

The Bears go in full pads the first two days of the week and then only in helmets on the third day, but typically the first day is when the most hitting takes place.

Football: Sunday quick hitters

For the second straight week, Sunday is like Tuesday for the Bears as they prepare for Thursday’s game against USC on ESPN. A few quick nuggets before a more thorough report later:

  • As expected, CB Marc Anthony didn’t practice. He dislocated his shoulder against Oregon. Jeff Tedford said Anthony is day to day.
  • DE Trevor Guyton didn’t practice as well. No further info on his injury right now is available.
  • Assuming Anthony doesn’t play, freshman Stefan McClure will start. Defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast said the third corner would be either true freshman Kam Jackson, redshirt freshman Adrian Lee or junior Josh Hill, who will continue to be the nickel back as well.
  • Thursday’s game is a near sellout, with only limited view or obstructed seats available at this point.

Football: Tuesday practice update

Cal wrapped up its preparations for Oregon this morning at Witter Rugby Field under overcast skies with rain in the past and in the forecast.

Hmmm…sounds a lot like the place the Bears are headed Wednesday morning.

The forecast in Eugene calls for pretty steady rain Wednesday and then some morning showers on Thursday morning. It actually might let up for the game, but the conditions should still be wet.
