Odd

Here’s an odd one: The Bears have now allowed 22 field goals, the most against them ever in a season. Chew on that one for awhile.

A first

This is the first time that DeSean Jackson, Lavelle Hawkins and Robert Jordan each have had touchdown catches in the same game.

Halftime

Jeff Tedford initially said he wanted to play Kevin Riley for a series or two. Now, it’s hard to imagine Nate Longshore will come back into the game. Riley obviously made plays and gave the offense a spark when he got in there.

Meanwhile, it looks as though the Bears have figured some things out on defense. They’ve gone with a fast three-man front with Rulon Davis and Cameron Jordan on the ends and Derrick Hill in the middle, and Air Force isn’t having as much success with the option. The return of Thomas DeCoud also was a difference-maker — he blew up two plays single-handedly in the second quarter.

Riley was 9-for-11 for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Justin Forsett has 42 yards rushing and DeSean Jackson has four catches for 73 yards and a score.

Update

Just a note pointing out that the first quarter has come to a close and DeCoud, Jackson and Jordan still have not entered the game.

Pregame festivities

The Armed Forces Bowl is sponsored by Bell Helicopter, which supplies its products to the military. There was a majestic demonstration a few minutes ago when the company displayed its helicopters by sending a few of them up and around the stadium. They took off from a roped off area right behind the stadium, appearing over the concourse then ultimately flying away.

A change

Not surprisingly, for the first time this season, free safety Thomas DeCoud is not a captain. DeCoud was pulled from the starting lineup, along with wide receivers DeSean Jackson and Robert Jordan, for violating team rules. DeCoud had been a captain for all 12 regular season games, along with tight end Craig Stevens. Today’s captains are Stevens, running back Justin Forsett, linebacker Greg Van Hoesen and cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson.

The windy city?

Greetings from the press box at TCU. The weather here the past few days has been terrific. Just a slight chill in the air, calm blue skies. I woke up this morning to find a brisk wind, making it by far the coldest morning so far. Looking across the stadium now, the flags at the top of the concourse are whipping in the wind, so it looks as though it’s going to be a cold one today. But hey, these guys are football players, and they still are warming up in their t-shirts and shorts on the field as we speak.

Funny moment a few minutes ago: Jordan Kay and Andrew Larson were kicking field goals, when defensive end Rulon Davis butted in. His 50-yard attempt fell harmlessly at the 10-yard line.

Air Force coach Troy Calhoun has been playing the size card all week, painting his team as smallish underdogs. The size differential is apparent as you watch warm-ups. But as Jeff Tedford has been saying, the Falcons won nine games somehow.

I’ll check in a little bit later as we get nearer to kickoff.
