Checkpoints will be set up in Pittsburg and Martinez this Memorial Day weekend in an effort to identify and arrest suspected drunken drivers, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s office reported Tuesday.
The checkpoints are part of the county’s Avoid the 25 Anti-DUI Campaign, which also includes sending additional officers out on patrol throughout the county to look for impaired drivers.
A checkpoint will be set up Friday night in Martinez and Saturday night in Pittsburg, according to the sheriff’s office. Local police from each city will be assisted by California Highway Patrol officers and sheriff’s deputies. Officers will be stopping all drivers passing through the checkpoints, verifying their licenses and looking for signs of intoxication.
Last Memorial Day weekend, 79 people throughout Contra Costa County were arrested for DUI-related violations and two people were killed in drunk driving crashes. Nationwide, 16,000 people were killed in DUI-related vehicle accidents alone, according to the sheriff’s office.
