WILLIAM BRAND: WHAT’S ON TAP

Peculier English story has a fortunate finish

The once-tidy world of English brewing has been turned on its ear in recent years: Coors owns the Bass brewery, InBev owns a big chunk of UK brewing and much of the charm and funk of English beer is fading. InBev even closed the where Boddington’s was made. But there’s still at least one unusually named beer left in England: It’s Old Peculier (***+), and it’s our Beer of the Week. Old P is some good stuff. You can find it in bottles at the Black rose here in Santa Rosa.

Hey Mario… is the Black Rose a store or a pub? Got an address, phone number?

love this stuff. in the mid 80’s, they had a funky aluminum foil cover on the top and the oddest shaped bottle. I think it was sold in 3 packs at the old Liqour Barn…

You got it right. I think they still have an odd-shaped bottle. And yes, I too bought it at the old Liquor Barn. Ahhh memories.

I was introduced to it via Jack Curry’s “Beers Of The World” club at the Prince Of Wales. Short, fat bottle with a wide mouth, as I recall. And I remember it tasting much stronger than 5.6%. Of course, this was after drinking Hamms out of wax cups all night at Candlestick.

That’s right, they were short, kind of stubby bottled with a wide mouth. I think Old Peculier tasted strong because of the dark maots and the yeast used to brew it. The yeast produces an earthy, almost funky spiciness, which I love.

Black Rose is a pub. It faces the 101 near the JC. Take the Steele Lane exit and head towards what used to be the A&W. Green building. Definitely worth a visit when you’re in town.
