There are tons of beer videos out there, just Google “beer” and “video” and you’ll get thousands of hits. One of the newest sites is thebeergeek.com. They’re in the process of doing “a year in beer”
videos; the photography is superlative and the content’s getting better and better and better.
I met the founders, Chris Nelson and his wife, Merideth Canham-Nelson a couple of months ago at Beer Chef Bruce Paton’s Bear Republic beer dinner and I’ve been hanging out on their site from time-to-time. It’s worth a look and it’s getting better.
Chris who runs a hgh-tech-computer business and Merideth got interested in craft beer and good beer generally when they lived in the East Bay and made Barclay’s on College Avenue in Oakland their local pub.
The original idea was to create a travel show; somewhere between Rick Steves and Anthony Bourdain, they explain. But no TV deals came through so they went anyway.
They now live in Monterey and decided, what the hell, they had tons of frequent flier miles from Chris’ work, so they set out to visit the world’s great beer festivals and beer countries.
Their schedule so far this year has been amazing:
- January, Great Alaska Beer & Barleywine Festival in Anchorage, AK
- February, Beerapalooza/Toronado Barleywine Festival in San Francisco.
- March, St. Patrick’s Day in Boston, MA
- April, Seattle, WA
- May, Franconia & Bergkirchweih Beer Festival in Erlangen, Germany
- June, Summer Solstice in Ireland
- July, Oregon Brewers Festival in Portland, OR
- August, Great British Beer Festival in London
Whew. The photography really is broadcast quality, not scrunched-up mpeg. Chris, who handles most of the photographer explained that it’s a quite different format. It’s the best Web site photography I’ve ever seen on my laptop.
Their spirit is infectious and the beer they try is mouth-watering. The trouble has been that their documentation’s a big sparse. In the Irish segment for instance, they wander through the lush Irish countryside, swigging beer at locals. But it’s difficult to understand where they are or learn much about the beer. But the photography’s super.
The Oregon fest was similar, although they caught events I’d never seen like the brewers’ parade through Portland.
The England segment was much improved. They started out taking a Campaign for Real Ale hiking trail tour outside London at the Rose & Crown. Trouble is, I couldn’t find out which Rose & Crown it was. They explain they’re in Somerset, but the county in southwest England has a number of pubs named Rose & Crown.
I did finally learn what the pub game called “skittles” is and watched it being played. The Great British Beer Festival segment was well-done. They volunteered for shifts as servers. But I wondered what beers they were serving and did they get to taste this year’s Champion Beer of Britain - Alton’s Pride, a 3.8 percent bitter (In bottles it would be a pale ale) brewed by Triple fff Brewery in Hampshire.
Now, they’re off to do a beer in the wine country segment here in California, then on to Oktoberfest in Munich and I for one will be watching for their show, when they get it up. But hey, more info please. Which of the major Munich beer tents has the best fest beer or was it all similar? I’ d love to know that.
It usually takes them a couple of weeks after an event to edit the show put it up, so be patient. thebeergeek.tv is worth the wait.
