Events.  The holiday/Christmas season is really cranking up. Here’s just a handful of upcoming things this week:

Jug Shop, 1590 Pacific Ave., San Francisco, CA 94109, (415) 885-2922  is holding two Christmas beer tastings this Friday and Saturday. This is a high end wine shop that also stocks some great beer:

  • The first tasting on Friday will feature imports from Belgium, Austria and Germany. We’ll have 10 of these open, including brews from Brasserie Dupont, Scaldis, Gouden Carolus, Delirium, St. Bernardus, De Glazen Toren, Samiclaus and Pinkus. Then on Saturday, we’ll showcase 14 winter beers from domestic craft brew stars such as He’Brew, Moylans, Marin Brewing Company, Shipyard, Avery, Deschutes, New Belgium, Anchor and Wandering Aengus. Tasting fee for each event is $15 per person. Helmets are optional.
  • Jingle Beer Part I - The Imports, Friday, December 5th, 6pm to 8pm $15 per person
  • Jingle Beer Part II - The Domestics, Saturday, December 6th, 5pm to 7pm $15 per person

Celebrate Prohibition Repeal Friday, Dec. 5, at Triple Rock Brewery, 1920 Shatuck Ave., Berkeley. Jesse Sarinana, Triple Rock’s GM, sent this note:

  • We tap our Pre-Prohibition Mild Ale that we brewed to commemorate the repeal of the 18th amendment. It finished out at 4.6% a.b.v. and is aptly named RepeALE.  We are going to be throwing a theme party here at Triple Rock on Friday, 12/5 and will be turning the back part of the bar into a sealed off speakeasy complete with a password that will be given out on our website and at the bar the day of the party…

Several weeks ago someone ventured that Sacramento had better beer than the Bay Area too… So I guess we’ve slipped to third on the Left Coast here in the bay, eh?

  2. craig Says:

just like our once proud sport’s teams…lol!

  3. William Brand Says:

Ahhh. I don’t think so. Don’t think there’s any pub in Sacramento to match the Toronado or the Bistro or Barclay;s They do have some nice brewpubs, Rubicon and Hoppy are my two fabvorites. Comments anyone.

  4. William Brand Says:

And only God and time can help the Raiders.

Our hockey team rules the universe right now, though.

Incidentally, the Poor House Bistro (across from the arena) had Mavericks IPA (Half Moon Bay) on tap the other night in their patio bar. Turbodog always on tap inside. Throw some Cajun eats and live blues into the mix and this place i easily my favorite pre-game hangout in the area.

  6. William Brand Says:

:Poor House Bistro? I’ve been by there a number of times. Will have to remember it. Just addied it to our Good Pub List.

  7. craig Says:

i’ll agree with “toronado”…but not with the other two…although “barklay’s”….members day is fantastic…last time i was in sacto(ribicon’s 20th annaversary party) i went to “sac brewing” at fulton and marconi…i was impressed…happy hr on sat… nice setting…5-6 drinkable beers on tap..and the best “mug club” i ever head of…it was my first visit and i will be back…

  8. William Brand Says:

Barclay’s is easily one of my top favorites in the East Bay. They have a tremendously varying beer list and a lot of brewers and homebrewers make it their local.

    Barclay’s Pub & Restaurant, 5940 College Ave.,(510) 654-1650
    Oakland CA

  9. craig Says:

i like “barclays”..i go their for members day…when it is not members day…i go to “ben & nicks” just up the street…it is more of an “ale” house and they have les tap’s and take better care of their lines…

  10. William Brand Says:

Ben & Nick’s is excellent. So is their companion pub, Cato’s Ale House, which I frequent occasionally,.
