Oddbits...New Belgium Fat Tire in cans? Tim White our ace Hayward correspondent reports that he actually saw a can of Fat Tire at the Bistro in downtown Hayward. Prioprietor Vic Kralj told him New Belgium’s distributor said canned Fat Tire would be on sale in the Bay Area in a week or two… New Belgium began canning Fat Tire, their best-seller (and far from my favorite New Belgium beer) this summer…Meanwhile, at 21st Amendment in San Francisco, Shaun O’Sullivan says their canned Brew Free Or Die! IPA is really selling. You can buy this champion beer at Beverages & More stores in the Bay Area…

They’re also selling Hell or High Watermelon Wheat in cans.  But the real kick is to walk into 21st and see the way they serve the beer. It comes in a pilsner glass with a wedge of watermelon, sort of a wry takeoff on Widmer’s Hefeweizen and the lemon wedge.  What’s really funny was a burly guy in black sitting across from me slurping his Watermelon Wheat with the watermelon wedge.  I looked over and then he removed the wedge. What the hell, it’s a very good wheat beer. I’ll drink it with the wedge too.

Back to Hayward for a moment…the launch date for Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale is  Sept. 30, 5:30 p.m. This is the brewpub’s version. The natinally distributed, bottled version’s made under contract by Pyramid. Meanwhile,  Tim White says Buffalo Bill’s has put its Christmas Blueberry Stout on tap. They brewed a batch to enter at the Great American Beer Festival next month, so they’re gonna’ sell the rest at the pub.

And back to the canned beer beat…Rogue is going to ship their Yellow Snow IPA this year in five liter cans.  Here’s Rogue:

Yellow Snow is Rogue’s tribute to winter sports everywhere—downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country, ice hockey, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and even curling.

And oh yes,  dedicated, I guess to what guys do out there in the snow when nature calls…

Gotta’ love Rogue for their honesty as well as their sense of humor.. They always provide complete specs on their beers. Here’s what they say about Yellow Snow:

Yellow Snow IPA is created from 6 Ingredients: Two-Row Pale, Cara Foam & Melanoiden Malts; Amarillo Hops; Free Range Coastal Waters; Top Fermenting Pacman Yeast. Pale golden in color with a hoppy fruity aroma. Big hop flavor up front complimented by medium body and hoppyness mid-pallet. It finishes with a characteristic, lingering bitterness.
Yellow Snow IPA measures 15º PLATO, 70 IBU, 76 AA, 14º L.

Wow.. I wonder how much that 5L mini keg will sell for.

  2. Scott B. Says:

Just curious – what is your favorite beer from New Belgium?

  3. Dr Wort Says:

Someone asks me the other day….

Didn’t Fat Tire taste better when it first came out?

    I answered: “Ummmmm…..no…..”

** I could give the same answer for Bill Owen’s Original Buffalo Bill Pumpkin Ale! Never could dink through a pint, but it was a interesting novelty! Can’t believe they sell it in 6-packs. Of course, it does come out around Halloween…. It’s a nice Trick or Treat present for 6 friends. Let the receivers decide if it’s a TREAT or a TRICK! :-O

    ;-}

Answers. Answers. Waiting for a call back from Jack Joyce at Rogue on the price of the 5L can.

Currently, my favorite New Belgium beer is….well, I have several. Eric’s Sour Peach Ale is dynamite (only in kegs, not bottled), 1554, the black , historic ale, is excellent. Also Sunshine Wheat,, Mothership Wit, La Folie, Tripel and Abbey Ale.

Fat Tire’s a cult beer with a cute name, but it’s an average amber, in my humble opinion.

Personally, I don’t like pumpkin pie or pumpkin beer. There is one I like. Elysian Great Pumpkin. Not bottled, only available in Seattle, I’m afraid. There may be others. Ideas, suggestions, anyone?

  5. William Brand Says:

Just talked to Jack Joyce at Rogue He said “suggested retail price: will be $37.99. “We have no idea how well it will do, ” Joyce said. “We just thought we’d try to put a good beer in a draft can and give the public a chance to buy it.:

    Good work Jack.

  6. The Duke of Dunkel Says:

I’m not a big fan of pumpkin beers either, but Dogfish Head Punkin’ is really quite nice, and evidently now available in the Bay Area.

  7. William Brand Says:

Hey Duke…where did you see it? I haven’t heard that it’s available. And Dogfish beers are only being sold in Marin, San Francisco and Sonoma (and maybe a bit on the Peninsula,. but not in the East Bay.

    I’m with you. Eschew pumpkin.

  8. The Duke Of Dunkel Says:

City Beer just got it. I assume this means it’ll be showing up at the other places that carry DFH.

  9. Derrick Says:

    >Dogfish beers are only being sold in Marin, San >Francisco and Sonoma (and maybe a bit on the >Peninsula,. but not in the East Bay.

The good news is that you can get Dogfish Beers at two BevMo locations in San Jose. (The corner of Cambrian and Union for sure, and I believe the new one a Santa Teresa Blvd., don’t know about the Willow Glen BevMo) No, I don’t work for BevMo, just like their selection.

  10. easong Says:

Dogfish Head Ales (Midas, 90 Minute IPA) have been showing up at the better Whole Foos locations on the Peninsula (RC, Los Altos, Cupertino). I’m headed back east tomorrow — hope to get some fresh on tap.

i just stumbled upon city beer last time i was in the city. rad little place. i dug the atmosphere and expecialy the beer. everybody was having a good time. i just happened to get a seat right before it got busy though.

its crazy to see russian river beer everywhere now.
they shouldn’t leave a full keg of pliny by the door, i almost took it. if i could have lifted it. ha.

dogfish head is finally in the north bay. since the past month or two. i’ve found it at two whole foods. in santa rosa (on yulupa ave.) and in sonoma (on highway 12). now when will cali get the 120 minute. yeah, its kinda novelity, but not really. it taste freaking amazing. plus the 20 alcholol content is kinda a good way to start a session. do i have a problem???

speaking of high content… has anyone tried the amnesia or the labadomy? i’ve seen them both at whole foods, simple package, high content. maybe this weekend…

  12. William Brand Says:

Enjoy..the east Easong. It’s great fun to walk into a store as I did in Boston a cpiuple of months ago and see a whole long line of Dogfish Beers, cheek by jowl with a number of Brooklyn Brewing beers.

Trips east used to be boring and I used to call it the “boring beer coast”. My, has that ever changed.

  13. William Brand Says:

Hi Michael, I think you mean Lobotomy Bock from Indian Wells Brewing,
Inyokern, CA — thats on Hwy. 395 out on the Mohave Desert

    From the Web site:

    http://www.mojave-red.com/lb.asp

    Lobotomy Bock
    Alcohol by Volume: 10.8%
This smooth rich dark southern German dobblebock is an Indian Wells Brewing Co. favorite. This 10.8% beer is powerful, but VERY easy to drink! This beer is not for the timid. A few of them and you’ll feel like you’ve had a frontal lobotomy the next day. Consume with caution!

  14. William Brand Says:

This is for Duke. yes, dogfish punkin head is in San Francisco. Gonna do a post about it tomorrow. I don’t usually like pumpkin beers, but I believe you are right. Thios is a good’un.

  15. Michael Says:

william, i’m not sure if you’ve tried the lobotomy bock…it was on sale at whole foods. so i picked it up.

disappointing. maybe i got a old bottle, or something….but there is very little character to the beer. it tastes a little watered down, no body. it’s been a year since i’ve had a dobblebock. do you cali folks get leine’s big butte? thats not bad for the money. us wisconsin folks (mostly german pop.), make some killer dobblebocks or great beer for that matter.

found this today….maybe you have to be from wi, to really apprciate it…

  17. William Brand Says:

Abot Lobotomy Bock. After your post, I looked in my beer fridge and realized I do have a bottle. Well, I’ll try it, but doesn’t sound great.

  18. Robert Says:

Fat Tire tasted of biscuit and I loved it. I just had two bottles that came out of their packaging with the winter scene on it and I taste very little biscuit in either one of them. What’s with that?
