On this decidedly cold and rainy night, there is good news and bad news. First, the bad. The De Struise Black Albert on tap at City Beer, 1168 Folsom St., San Francisco that went on tap at noon Saturday, is gone.
The good news is that The Trappist, 460 8th St. in downtown Oakland the the De Struise Christmas beer, Tsjeeses, is on tap tonight: $10 for a 25 cl glass. They also have 33 cl bottles of Black Albert for sale, $12, Tsjeeses, $10 and Pannepot Old Fisherman’s Ale, $10.

So William, fresh on tap, is De Struise still, in your opinion, the greatest brewer ever?

Hell no, Mario. It’s just expensive, interesting, hard to get. The “best beer in the world:” stuff is pure bull wacky. They are somewhat complex, really interesting beers. De Struise is one guy, brewing a few days a month at someone else’s brewery. I think, for instance, that aged Stille Nacht is superior. Yesterday, I had a glass of 2007 Old Stock Ale (North Coast) brewed in 2096, aged a year in whisky barrels that was to die for…
We live in the best of all possible times. Lots of great beer, imcluding de Struise Browers.

I know the beer you’re talking about. I’ve got a bottle of their Brandy barrel version waiting for some special occasion down the road. I tried another bottle of it I had this summer and “to die for” is an excellent way to put it. Haven’t had a chance to try the Whiskey barrel version.
By the way, if you’re in Fort Bragg, Rasputin XI is now available. No more mail order purchases as too many bottles found their way on eBay last time.

Hey William -
I was at city beer and tried De Struise’s Black Albert, and I wasn’t impressed. I have a few more tasting notes here:

but overall, I just thought it didn’t live up anywhere near what the hype had built it up to be.

I found it mildly amusing that City Beer’s newsletter stressed their keg of Black Albert was one of just twenty in the entire United States of America, and then the Trappist taps one the very next week.
