The 10 Commandments of Craft Beer

Jim, the beer-half of the Beer & Whiskey Brothers blog with his brother Don, has a fun list they created; The Ten Commandments of Craft Beer. They’re not so much “commandments” in the sense that you’re being commanded, but it’s a pretty good list of things you can do to get the most out of enjoying craft beer. What would you add? Is there anything you disagree with?

Wesley Ashley Wines winemaker dinner Oct. 17

If you like rustic Southern Rhone wines with a fruity California edge, you may want to check out this upcoming winemakers dinner at Vesu in Walnut Creek.

Wesley Ashley Wines is the brainchild of James Sloate, an Alamo resident whose love for hearty blends and philosophical bent led him to create two cuvees, Intelligent Design, and Intelligent Design Blanc. Winemaker Jason Welch brings his vision to life.

The grapes for the red wine hail from Clos La Chance’s estate vineyards in San Martin. The red is a blend of six varietals: carignan, grenache, cinsault, petite sirah, and pinot noir. The 2007 is dark ruby in color with aromas and flavors of rich berry pie.

The white blend – viognier, roussane, and grenache blanc – were harvested in Santa Barbara County. Intelligent Design Blanc has a tropical and creamy characteristic, with just slightly too much French oak for me on the finish.

Chef Robert Sapirman of Vesu has planned a four course dinner for these two wines, and it includes halibut ceviche and citrus braised pork. In addition to the two wines, you’ll have an opportunity to taste upcoming blends out of barrel as well as a sweet treat paired with Sapirman’s decadent Point Reyes Blue Cheese Beignets: Intelligent Design Syrup.

Need I say more? Tickets are $70 for wine club members; $80 for everyone else. To reserve your spot, contact Vesu at 925-280-8378.

Beehive Market wine dinners in Berkeley

Matt Smith of Blacksmith Cellars

The Beehive Market in Berkeley is taking local to a new level. A wine level.

Since Sept. 14, the green lifestyle market – where you can snack on raw vegan bars whilst learning about rainwater catchment systems – has hosted weekly wine themed dinners with winemakers from the East Bay Vintners. The Beehive Market occurs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in the parking lot of the Berkeley Adult School.

The dinners, which happen on Tuesdays at the Beehive’s exclusive loft, are three courses and each course is paired with a different wine from the showcased winery.

A little appetite whetting: At the launch with Blacksmith Cellars, chef John Silva of Culinary Eye Catering paired the winery’s syrah-grenache blend with a Roasted Halibut with Smoked Tomato Sugo. At the upcoming Sept. 28 dinner with Periscope Cellars, there will be Moroccan Spiced Soul Food Chicken sausages with Brendan Eliason’s killer 2006 Rose.

By now, your mouth is watering. You need valuable information. How do I partake? How do I support a local endeavor while eating organic and rubbing elbows with my local vintners?

The cost is $55. Reservations are required. The dinners take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Beehive Loft, 2607 Seventh Street, Suite A, Berkeley. Reservations can be made by calling 510-644-9517.

Brews On the Bay 2010

Trying to catch up after being gone a week at GABF, the week before I attended the annual Brews on the Bay beer festival put on by the San Francisco Brewers Guild. It’s such a unique, fun event in such a great setting that I really enjoy it going each year.

GABF Winners 2010

gabf-new
On Saturday, the winners of the Great American Beer Festival were announced for 2010. A total of 236 medals were awarded in 79 categories (gold, silver and bronze). California breweries took home the highest total of any state, with 52 of the 236 awards, or about 22% of the total. Colorado won 40 and Oregon 19, making them 2nd and 3rd, respectively. The top winners by state were:

  1. California — 52 (last year 39, 2nd)
  2. Colorado — 40 (last year 44, 1st)
  3. Oregon — 19 (last year 22, 3rd)
  4. Michigan — 10 (last year 9, 6th)
  5. Pennsylvania — 9 (last year 14, 4th)
  6. 5-Way TIE: Illinois, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin — 7
  7. 2-Way TIE: Missouri, Ohio — 6

Just for fun, this year I also ran the medal numbers weighted, using 3 for gold, 2 for silver, and 1 for bronze. Here’s how things shake out that way:

  1. California — 110
  2. Colorado — 85
  3. Oregon — 30
  4. Michigan — 22
  5. Pennsylvania — 19
  6. 3-Way TIE: Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin — 15
  7. 2-Way TIE: Missouri, Utah — 14

California also won the most gold medals (19), followed by Colorado (14) and a 3-way tie between Michigan, Virginia and Wisconsin, with 4 each.

Bay Area breweries alone accounted for 19 medals, including four gold medals and eight silvers.

For now, you can see the full list here. One quick cool stat for California; 4 out of the 6 big awards for brewery of the year in different size categories were won by California breweries.

I Am A Craft Beer Drinker

First there was Greg Koch’s I Am A Craft Brewer, a short video he used to finish his keynote speech at the Craft Brewers Conference a few years ago. That was followed up by I Am A Homebrewer and I Am A Canadian Craft Brewer. New Brew Thursday has just premiered the latest one, this time from the perspective of the consumer, in I Am A Craft Beer Drinker. Enjoy.

A Conversation With Fritz Maytag

Reason TV, the video arm of Reason magazine (who I’ve written for), was created through a grant from Drew Carey. They’ve done a number of short online videos on a variety of subjects, and have their own YouTube channel. They even did one based on, or perhaps inspired by, the article I did for them a few years ago, entitled Beer: An American Revolution.

More recently, they did an interesting 10-minute interview with Fritz Maytag, the godfather of the craft beer movement in America. If you’ve heard Maytag speak before or have been around him any length of time, there’s nothing new in the interview, but with him moving into the role of Emeritus as new owners take over the day-to-day operations, it’s great to have a video record of some of Fritz’s stories. If you haven’t heard Fritz Maytag speak before, you’re in for a treat.
