Yes, in a sense. Trappist orders of monks helped save and promote beer in the middle ages, and at least seven Trappist orders continue to make some of the best beer in the world (6 are in Belgium, and one is in The Netherlands).

I can see the potential for beer to accumulate sophistication points. An upscale suppenkuche named Leopold’s just opened near me, in fact, and surely that kind of thing will help bolster beer in the beer vs. wine culture war. But wine, and especially red wine, has quite a cultural foundation, especially that whole blood to wine metaphor built into the Catholic faith, which, if you think about it, serves as a great justification to drink it. Does beer have anything similar?
