Oktoberfest 2012 Begins Today

By Jay Brooks
Saturday, September 22nd, 2012 at 5:38 pm in On Beer

Today at noon the mayor of Munich tapped the ceremonial keg to kick off Oktoberfest. The My Destination travel blog has created an interesting infographic (I confess I love these type of things) with the statistics of just how much food and drink was consumed at last year’s folk festival.

Bistro 18th Anniversary Tomorrow in Hayward

By Jay Brooks
Thursday, September 20th, 2012 at 9:41 am in On Beer

The Bistro, in Hayward, California, has been an institution for … well, eighteen years. They put on four niche festivals each year — Double IPA, IPA, Wet Hop and Wood Aged — plus a hops rhizome event. Tomorrow they’re celebrating their 18th anniversary, not with a whimper, but a bang.

On tap, they’ll have some classic beers, such as Anchor Christmas Ale 1999 and in bottles, such rarities as a vertical tasting of North Coast Old Stock from 2000 until the present vintage, Unibroue’s anniversary ale, from 2004 to 2007. They’ll also have bottles of Russian River Brewing’s first bottling of batch 23 — circa 2007 — and Avery The Beast 2008 to name just a few.

There will be live music at the pub, beginning at 4:30, with The Hipbones, who first played here in 1997, The Travis Larson Band, along with special guest from Canada, Dave Martone.

The festivities start when they open at 10:30. Should be a great time. Happy 18th Vic and Cynthia!

Peter Rowe, the man behind the television show Dirty Jobs, has a new three-part series that debuts tonight: How Booze Built America. I suspect they’ll be playing fast and loose with much of beer’s history, but it should be at least an entertaining show. Check out the first episode on the Discovery channel. White House Releases Homebrew Recipe

By Jay Brooks
Tuesday, September 4th, 2012 at 11:50 am in On Beer

I bet it must be nice for President Obama’s people to be inundated by something positive for a change. When the White House announced that the kitchen was going to be homebrewing, even using honey made by White House bees, people wanted to know what the recipe was for the two beers they were brewing. After a petition to release the recipes garnered over 12,000 signatures, the White House did release the recipes on the White House Blog and their We the People page, a Honey Ale and a Honey Porter. Here was the White House response:

Inspired by home brewers from across the country, last year President Obama bought a home brewing kit for the kitchen. After the few first drafts we landed on some great recipes that came from a local brew shop. We received some tips from a couple of home brewers who work in the White House who helped us amend it and make it our own. To be honest, we were surprised that the beer turned out so well since none of us had brewed beer before.

As far as we know the White House Honey Brown Ale is the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds. George Washington brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine but there’s no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House. (Although we do know there was some drinking during prohibition…)

Since our first batch of White House Honey Brown Ale we’ve added the Honey Porter and have gone even further to add a Honey Blonde this past summer. Like many home brewers who add secret ingredients to make their beer unique, all of our brews have honey that we tapped from the first ever bee-hive on the South Lawn. The honey gives the beer a rich aroma and a nice finish but it doesn’t sweeten it.

And here’s the recipe for the Honey Ale:

The White House also created a short video about the homebrew project, which you can see at YouTube.

And here’s the recipe for the Honey Porter:

Wondering how the recipe might work out? Garrett Oliver, brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewing expressed his opinion in the New York Times, in White House Beer: A Brewer Weighs In.

California Craft Brewers Video

By Jay Brooks
Thursday, August 30th, 2012 at 11:01 am in On Beer

The CCBA (California Craft Brewers Association) website has a fun California-centric video up on their website. It’s in the style of Greg Koch’s original I Am A Craft Brewer video, but features all California brewers. It’s apparently on behalf of both the CCBA and Support Your Local Brewery. Having visited almost all of the 180 breweries in Northern California researching my forthcoming book California Breweries: North, it’s great to see so many familiar faces. Enjoy.

Since embedding won’t work on Bottoms Up, here’s the link to the video on YouTube.

Anderson Valley Teams With Wild Turkey To Make Bourbon Barrel Beers

By Jay Brooks
Tuesday, August 14th, 2012 at 8:36 am in On Beer

Boonville’s Anderson Valley Brewing announced today that they’re partnering with the bourbon maker Wild Turkey to develop bourbon barrel-aged beers. The first will be made using their Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout.

Anderson Valley brewer Fal Allen, with Jimmy and Eddie Russell, from Wild Turkey, at Anderson Valley’s brew kettles.

From the press release:

As part of an exclusive partnership and licensing agreement, the Anderson Valley Brewing Company and the famed bourbon brand Wild Turkey® announced today that they will be teaming to facilitate the brewing of world-class Bourbon-barrel aged craft beers using repurposed American oak barrels from the Wild Turkey Distillery in Kentucky.

“I’ve been familiar with Anderson Valley Brewing for some time, and I’ve always admired the pride and care they take in crafting and brewing their beer,” said Jimmy Russell, Wild Turkey Master Distiller. “It’s similar to the approach we take with our bourbon, which made this partnership such a natural fit. Now I finally have a good excuse to drink a great craft beer!”

“The opportunity to partner with the Bourbon Hall of Fame Russell family and Wild Turkey is tremendously exciting,” said Trey White, Anderson Valley owner and CEO. “We have done some trial brews with a limited number of Wild Turkey barrels over the past several months and the beers to date have been awesome. We cannot wait to create some truly special craft beers with hundreds rather than a handful of barrels. The relationship with Wild Turkey provides Anderson Valley with a world class, consistent source of barrelage rather than randomly sourced barrelage in limited quantities. Anderson Valley, working with the Russell’s, will explore new frontiers in barrel aged craft beer.”

The initial production from this first-of-its-kind collaboration will be a Bourbon barrel aged Stout featuring Anderson Valley’s award-winning Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout. Aged for three months, the resulting beer will be deep ebony in hue with a beautiful mahogany head, an aroma of fresh-baked bread, toffee, and espresso mingling with the woody vanilla notes of Bourbon whiskey and the rich roasted flavors wrapped with Bourbon.

“We chose to work with Wild Turkey not only because their whiskey is so outstanding — they are also the only major Bourbon producer to use a #4 “alligator” char on their barrels. This helps to introduce way more flavor to the Bourbon, and therefore way more flavor to our famous Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout,” continued White.

This draft-only production will be released in the fall and will be followed by packaged products in early 2013. Anderson Valley and Wild Turkey personnel will work jointly in the coming months on a variety of exciting promotional opportunities both on and off premise to expose their respective consumers to the quality and authenticity of Bourbon barrel aged products.

So that should be interesting. Autumn has always been my favorite season, now there’s one more reason to look forward to it.

By Jay Brooks
Tuesday, June 12th, 2012 at 5:33 pm in On Beer

You know what you really want for Father’s Day: beer! And since it’s your day, how can your family say no? And now you really can get what you really want. Here’s how:

The Brewing Network’s Winter Brews Fest has spawned off-spring, and what better time to celebrate that than a Father’s Day-themed Summer Fest! The city of Concord and the East Bay- based craft beer radio company have joined forces once again to throw beer lovers a family friendly day, complete with a chili cook off, live music, an antique fair, a corvette car show, and more!

Unlike its January counter-part, this inaugural Summer Fest is open to all ages, with those over 21 getting a chance to sample dozens of different brews from local breweries such as 21st Amendment, Bear Republic, Creek Monkey, Deschutes, Drake’s, Firestone Walker, Heretic, Lagunitas, Ommegang, Stone, Uncommon Brewers, and more.

The Brewing Network’s 2012 Summer Fest will be held at Todos Santos Plaza in Concord, CA, on Sunday, June 17, 2012 from noon to 4pm. Rain or (what’s more likely) shine, they’ve got you covered, all you have to do is bring your fathers, surrogate or other, and give them a Father’s Day to remember. And with Concord BART just two blocks away, this event is bound to entice beer lovers from around the Bay to enjoy a responsible day celebrating Dad!

Tickets are $40 pre-sale and $50 at the gate and include unlimited tastes of beer, while-supplies-last chili, and a commemorative glass for the first 4,000 guests. Proceeds from the event will go to the Kiwanis Club and Contra Costa County Fire Department charities. For more information on the event, and to buy tickets please visit

Remember it’s your day. When they ask how you want to spend it, repeat after me. The Brewing Network’s Summer Fest on Father’s Day this Sunday.

World Beer Cup Awards 2012

By Jay Brooks
Sunday, May 6th, 2012 at 9:20 am in On Beer

Another record crowd of 2,034 sat down to a beer dinner by Adam Dulye of Monk’s Kettle and to listen to the awards for the 2012 Brewers Association World Beer Cup. This was the 10th World Beer Cup, which takes place every two years. This year’s competition saw 3,921 beers in 95 categories from 54 nations judged by 218 judges (including yours truly). That represented a nearly 18% increase over the last World Beer Cup and last night 284 awards were handed out to breweries from 21 countries. Congratulations to all the winners.

In years past, I recall writing that California won more medals than any country than Germany. This year, actually, two states won more medals than Germany, the nearest competitor — medal-wise — to the United States: Colorado and California. Germany took home 23 medals while Colorado alone won 27. California crushed it, winning 55 medals, more than both combined. The U.S. won a total 208 of the 284 medals, with Germany second and Belgium in third, with 8 medals. California and Colorado were 1 and 2, with Oregon in 3rd (12), Washington coming in 4th (10), Wisconsin 5th (9) and Indiana 6th (8). After that, there’s a drop off with some states winning 3 or 4. Again, IPA was the category with the most beers entered, 150, with number two this year being Imperial IPA, with 93 entries.
