Budget-reduction realities

School districts are starting to come out with numbers showing how much the state’s budget woes would hurt local education.

The Jefferson Elementary School District board, for instance, is scheduled Monday to consider a list of possible budget-reduction measures.

In the South San Francisco Unified School District, Superintendent Barbara Olds there has given these chilling prospects:

“We could lose approximately $260,000 of unrestricted funds this year, 2007-08.

“We will lose approximately $3,800,000 of unrestricted funds next year, 2008-09.

“We will lose approximately $550,000 of restricted/categorical funds next year.

“We will suffer a hit of approximately $1,100,000 of special education funding next year.

“In total, this represents a loss of approximately $5.7 million of funding to our district over the next year and a half.”

She goes on to say that the district “must begin to prepare for the worst.”

To that end, the district has already taken measures, including scrutinizing “each and every” general-fund expense, halting overtime and reviewing open positions for possible hiring freezes.

The South City district has scheduled a series of community forums on the budget and potential cuts to its schools.

The meetings are Feb. 25 at El Camino High, March 17 at South City High, April 7 at Parkway Heights Middle School and May 1 at Westborough Middle.

The meetings run from 6-7:30 p.m.
