Five local community-college students have won a $2,000 scholarship from the San Mateo County Retired Teachers Association.

They are Katrin Reimer of CaƱada College, Marcella Elmore and Vanessa Ramos of Skyline College in San Bruno, and Amy Rally and Jennifer Montgomery from College of San Mateo.

“It was difficult to choose our scholars this year since there were so many worthy applicants,” said Jim Triggas, chairman of the association’s scholarship committee. “However, the ones selected were exceptionally impressive in particular due to their previous experiences in dealing with children.”

The scholarship program awards deserving students who are graduating from a community college and aspire to become teachers.
