Number fatigue

From mid-August to early September, my head is spinning with numbers and percentages from student-achievement results released by the state Department of Education.

During that span, the department sends out the latest reports on STAR, API/AYP/PI and CAHSEE, that is, state test scores, academic-performance yardsticks and the high-school exit exam.

The last was the exit exam a week ago, and I’m still recovering today.

Math, science competitors square off

Math and science competitions over the next several days could prove as or even more intense than the Super Bowl.

On Saturday, middle-school students from across San Mateo County and elsewhere will compete in a local tournament of the national MATHCOUNTS contest.

Seat-belt champs

Coastside teens helped make youth driving safer in San Mateo County while leading Half Moon Bay to the title in the second High School Seat Belt Challenge.

This year, Half Moon Bay, Mills, Sequoia, Peninsula, Hillsdale and South San Francisco high schools competed for cash awards to see which campus could achieve the best overall rate of teen seat-belt use from two surveys done between Sept. 24 and Oct. 19.
