Getting “Ziggy” with it.

Nice blog entry today by ESPN’s Buster Olney regarding reliever Brad Ziegler. I’ll be honest, I didn’t pay much attention to Ziegler during the spring or even when he first came up. But he’s become a huge player in the A’s bullpen, and Olney outlines.

I have noticed, however, that Ziegler has become a bit more flaky when it comes to his other hobby. Ziegler hasn’t posted on athleticsnation.com nearly as often as he did in recent years. I talked to him about that, and he said it’s simply because of the time consumed doing his day job. Seems like a really good dude. He’s overcome a skull fracture to make to the big leagues, and perhaps because of that, he has a perspective that other players don’t.

Anyway, pay attention to this guy.

I’ve been following “Ziggy” with the Rivercats this year (I actually follow Brad Kilby and Jeff Gray, but it was hard not to notice Ziegler when looking at box scores)and I wondered when we would see him up with the A’s. He certainly is delivering in the majors. A joy to watch. Can we clone him?

I was very disappointed that he was taken out after 2 innings, though I suspect that’s all he generally pitches. I had a really bad feeling about Embree the minute I saw him take the mound. You never know when the Good Allen or the Bad Allen will show up, and the latter showed up last night. It is amazing that a 40-something pitcher can still throw 95 MPH, but he’s lost a lot of key games for the A’s this year, usually from coughing up the long ball. Maybe we should save him for late relief when we are at least 3 runs ahead. Just a thought.
