Trust me, go see Hiromi at Yoshi’s

Hiromi’s records, as good as they are, simply don’t do the young Japanese pianist justice. She’s so much better in concert than she is in the studio. Just ask anyone who saw Hiromi last year at Yoshi’s at Jack London Square in Oakland. The main reason for the difference is her enthusiasm, which translates wonderfully on the live stage.

The acclaimed jazz pianist, who was mentored by such musical giants as Ahmad Jamal and Chick Corea, is an absolute whirlwind of energy during her shows. That term also describes her musical mix, which is rooted in jazz but also draws from classical, rock and avant-garde styles.

The 28-year-old star returns to Yoshi’s for a four-night stand beginning tonight (May 3). Showtimes are 8 and 10 p.m. tonight through Saturday; 7 and 9 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10-$22. Yoshi’s is at 510 Embarcadero West. Call (510) 238-9200 or visit www.yoshis.com.
