In honor of this election year, I am looking back at the 25 greatest protest songs of all time. I’m starting with No. 25 and working my way up. Note: Each artist was only eligible to have one song make the list. To read past entries on this list, click here.
22, “Ignoreland,” R.E.M. (1992)
The Georgia band made a tuneful case that its homeboy Jimmy Carter was a pretty fine president as vocalist Michael Stipe slammed the state of affairs under the leadership of Ronald Reagan and George Bush. The song struck a nerve with listeners and “Ignoreland,” despite not being released as a single, became a hit song on the charts.

Wow. Great choice! I think this is one of R.E.M.’s most underappreciated songs (even if it appears on their most acclaimed album). Keep up the great work Jim! I’m also a music journalist (for the North Bay Bohemian) and I really enjoy your site.
