Carrie Underwood underwhelms in local concerts

Carrie Underwood

By Jim Harrington

The last six singles Carrie Underwood released all hit No. 1 on the country charts. That’s one of the reasons why it was a real no-brainer that she’d win Female Vocalist of the Year at last week’s Country Music Association Awards show.

The real amazing thing about her recent chart supremacy is that it hasn’t really translated to a solid songbook. Despite charting 10 singles in the last four years, and two multi-platinum-selling albums, Underwood boasts an astoundingly underwhelming amount of truly memorable songs.

That definitely factored into the 25-year-old country star’s show on Saturday night at Oracle Arena in Oakland. The 100-minute concert felt too long and didn’t contain nearly enough songs that truly connected with the near-capacity crowd.

Carrie Underwood

CARRIE UNDERWOOD
Carrie Underwood conquered “American Idol” and then went on to an even bigger stage - the Billboard charts. Carrie Underwood interview: Concert Blog meets American Idol

Carrie Underwood

Concert Blogger Roman Gokhman spoke with Carrie Underwood, in advance of her Oakland date.

Wearing the same dress she donned at the 2006 Country Music Association Awards, Carrie Underwood poses for photographs with her fans in New York. To demonstrate how far she has come since winning “American Idol” in 2005, she is surrounded by the likes of Beyonce, Madonna, Christina Aguilera — and Elvis Presley.

This scene is at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. Adding to the accolades, awards, album-sale records and nine No. 1 hits, Underwood has her very own wax figure that she christened last month.

The 25-year-old singer-songwriter, tapped to co-host the 42nd annual CMA Awards on Wednesday (Nov. 12), brings her “Carnival Ride” tour to the Oakland Arena on Saturday (Nov. 15).

Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, George Strait, Shania highlight CMAs

Shania Twain
Shania Twain

Here’s AP’s report:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Kenny Chesney won his fourth entertainer of the year award and George Strait became the most-honored artist in CMA Awards history at Wednesday’s ceremony, a show highlighted by a lavish performance by Taylor Swift, a surprise appearance by rapper Lil Wayne, and the return of one of country’s biggest stars, Shania Twain.

“You look really good,” Chesney remarked to Twain, who wore a sexy, low-cut dress as she presented Chesney with his award. Twain is one of country’s best-selling artists, but has spent the last several years out of the spotlight. She hadn’t been on the show in four years.

Elvis sings with Martina, Underwood, more: Take a listen

Following in the footprints of such partly posthumous collaborations as Nat and Natalie Cole’s Grammy-winning “Unforgettable,” “Elvis Presley Christmas Duets” is a collection of tunes that splice together Elvis’ original vocals with newly recorded sections uttered by some of the top female vocalists in the business. Surprisingly, it’s pretty good. Take a listen:

Grammy night: And the winners might be . . .

Amy Winehouse

Handicapping the Grammy race is tough work, since there are no reliable indicators as to voting trends. It’s one of the things that separate the music critics from the film scribes, who face a much easier challenge in forecasting the Oscars.

That said, here are my best guesses for the four main Grammy categories. Accompanying my picks _ as per usual _ are my dog Autumn’s choices (which are made through a very scientific, utterly random, process involving Pupperoni dog treats). I’ve also asked my fellow music scribe, the Mercury News’ Shay Quillen, to add his picks. We’ll see who gets the most right come Grammy night.

Record Of The Year
“Irreplaceable,’’ Beyonce
“The Pretender,’’ Foo Fighters
“Umbrella,’’ Rihanna Featuring Jay-Z
“What Goes Around…Comes Around,’’ Justin Timberlake
“Rehab,’’ Amy Winehouse

Jim’s comment: Right from the start, one has to decide whether Grammy voters are going to judge Winehouse on her musical merit alone or factor in all her colorful shenanigans. I’m predicting the latter and that Winehouse doesn’t have a big night. “Rehab’’ is clearly the best song in the bunch, but Beyonce isn’t likely to show up drunk.

Jim’s pick: “Irreplaceable’’
Shay’s pick: “What Goes Around”
Autumn’s pick: “Umbrella’’

Album Of The Year
“Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace,’’ Foo Fighters
“These Days,’’ Vince Gill
“River: The Joni Letters,’’ Herbie Hancock
“Graduation,’’ Kanye West
“Back To Black,’’ Amy Winehouse

Jim’s comment: There’s no slam dunk in the bunch _ not even a layup, actually. Vince Gill is incredibly popular in the industry, but did voters actually listen to the 4-CD, 43-song “These Days?’’ I think that voters will instead capitalize on the rare chance to award a jazz artist the big trophy and go with Hancock here. Plus, all-star efforts, like “River,’’ have a proven track record in recent Grammy shows.

Jim’s pick: “River: The Joni Letters’’
Shay’s pick: “River: The Joni Letters”
Autumn’s pick: “Graduation’’

Song Of The Year
(Given to songwriter, though artist that performed track is listed below.)
“Before He Cheats,’’ Carrie Underwood
“Hey There Delilah,’’ Plain White T’s
“Like a Star,’’ Corinne Bailey Rae
“Rehab,’’ Amy Winehouse
“Umbrella,’’ Rihanna Featuring Jay-Z

Jim’s comment: Whether or not voters agree, “Rehab’’ was definitely the song of the year. It was the rallying cry for jetsetters and trust-fund babies everywhere. Yet, Winehouse spent too much of 2007 looking like she needed to go to “Rehab.’’ Thus, Grammy voters will probably go with more family-friendly song _ like one about cheating and vandalism.

Jim’s pick: “Before He Cheats’’
Shay’s pick: “Hey There Delilah”
Autumn’s pick: “Rehab’’

Best New Artist
Feist
Ledisi
Paramore
Taylor Swift
Amy Winehouse

Jim’s comment: It would be nice to see the hometown gal, Oakland’s Ledisi, take home the prize, but I really don’t think that’s going to happen. Since the voters probably won’t endorse Winehouse _ the real Best New Artist _ it appears to be a two-horse race between Feist and Taylor Swift. Could go either way, but I think country music will edge indie-rock by a nose.

Jim’s pick: Taylor Swift
Shay’s pick: Feist
Autumn’s pick: Amy Winehouse

Daughtry, Akon, Hannah Montana among 2007’s big sellers

Fergie

The best-selling artists/records/tours of the year have been named. As per usual, most of the selections are highly mediocre. Go figure. Here’s the AP story announcing the champs:

NEW YORK—He may not have won “American Idol,” but Chris Daughtry is the king of the album charts this year, according to Billboard.

The “Idol” finalist’s band, Daughtry, sold 3.2 million copies of their self-titled debut, making it the most popular album of the year, according to the trade magazine. The group was followed by Akon, whose “Konvicted” sold 2.7 million; Fergie’s “The Dutchess,” which sold 2.4 million; the “Hannah Montana” soundtrack with 2.5 million copies sold; and 2005’s “American Idol” champ Carrie Underwood, whose “Some Hearts” sold 2.3 million copies.

Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” was the No. 1 single of the year, followed by Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” Both have been nominated for a Grammy for record of the year. Rounding out the top five was Gwen Stefani at No. 3 with “The Sweet Escape,” Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry” at No. 4 and T-Pain’s “Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin’)” at No. 5.

The Police’s reunion tour was named the top tour of the year, grossing at least $212 million.

From the small screen to SJ: American Idols Live!

After watching the American Idols Live! tour Tuesday (July 24) at HP Pavilion in San Jose, it’s no clearer whether any contestant from season six has true star potential.

The concert featured the top 10 finalists _ including eventual champ Jordin Sparks and runner-up Blake Lewis _ none of whom came across like a sure bet to join the ranks of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry as Idols that have thrived outside the show’s umbrella.

Yet, these TV darlings _ with the notable exception of Sanjaya Malakar _ showed enough to suggest that they have at least a fighting chance to make it in the real world.

The main thing that was proven on Tuesday night was something that, really, didn’t need to be further underscored. That is if you take a bunch of folks who can carry a tune and give them proven winners to sing then the crowd is going to have a pretty good time. And that was the case in San Jose.

The show was organized in a true Vegas-style revue fashion, with the singers taking solo spins and also working in various combos in front of a seven-piece backing band. The costume changes often matched the material _ for one example, the players donned military garb when singing “America the Beautiful.”
