The Warfield is ready to re-open its doors

Warfield

Five days before the re-opening of the Warfield, house manager Rick Bates looked around at all the construction and refurbishing going on inside the building. The sounds of driving nails and whirling drills brought a big smile to his face.

“It’s nice to see somebody put some money into her _ spruce up the old girl,” said Bates, who first captained the good ship Warfield back in the mid-‘90s. “Because she’s a great old gal.”

Well, now, that old gal is back. And most expect her to look _ and sound _ better than ever.

Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten team up

Who’s having the best year in the jazz music game? My vote goes to Stanley Clarke.

The year began with him still riding high on the commercial and critical success of the late-2007 release “The Toys of Men,” the phenomenal bassist’s first solo studio set since 2003.

It continued as Clarke joined with drummer Lenny White, keyboardist Chick Corea and guitarist Al Di Meola for the much-heralded reunion of Return to Forever. That fusion super-group’s tour, which followed a 25-year hiatus, has been dubbed by many as “the jazz event of 2008.” It certainly lived up to that lofty ranking during its stop at the Grand Ballroom at the Regency Center in San Francisco back in June.
