SAN JOSE, CA – November 14, 2008 — AEG Live, the promoter of Celine Dion’s Taking Chances World Tour, has rescheduled the artist’s San Jose concert at HP Pavilion, originally scheduled for Sunday, November 23, 2008, while Celine recuperates from a recurrent naso-pharyngeal infection which was further complicated by inflamed vocal chords. Tina Turner delivers true live spectacle

Tina Turner

Review from my pal, Shay Quillen of the Mercury News:

Let’s hear it once more for Tina Turner.

After some eight years away, the woman born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tenn., returned to San Jose on Sunday for the first of two nights at HP Pavilion with a show that features all the spectacle you could want — a tight seven-piece band, four sexy dancers, two female singers, gymnastic ninjas, countless costume changes, dazzling lights, red-hot pyro and a stage with more mechanical tricks than a Rube Goldberg invention.

But the center of attention, of course, is Ms. Turner herself, with that hair, those legs, that still unmistakable voice.

Now 68, Turner has made few concessions to age on this, her first tour since her “farewell” trek of 2000. It’s a little shorter — two 50-minute sets and two encores — and there are several extended set pieces for the dancers that let her catch her breath. But while she’s on the stage, she still keeps up with hoofers a third of her age — in spurts anyway — and still gives it everything she’s got when she’s singing.

New Kids mania still going strong in 2008: Concert review

New Kids on the Block

By Jim Harrington

The young girls that so feverishly loved and idolized the New Kids on the Block back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s are all grown up now. So, too, are the so-called “Kids,” all of who are now in their mid-to-late 30s.

Yet, the scene on Friday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose was one that could have rivaled the heyday of New Kids mania. The pitch of the screams was a bit lower, the merchandise was priced much higher and the beverages being guzzled required proof of legal drinking age. The similarities, however, vastly outnumbered the differences.

Seventeen years after the New Kids ruled the world – topping the Forbes magazine’s list of highest paid entertainers in 1991 – the quintet finds itself back on top, with a hit album (“The Block,” released last month), a smash single (“Summertime”) and a tour that is drawing sold-out crowds full of fanatic females.

Santana, Weezer, Duffy among week’s Top 10 best bets

Carlos Santana

By Jim Harrington

The hot-and-heavy concert schedule might end with the summer months in some parts of the country _ but not in the Bay Area. So, get set for another sensational week of live music, and other types of artistic fun, by the Bay:

1, Carlos Santana
Some years back, my colleague Tony Hick and I came up with a list of the top 25 guitarists in Bay Area history. In retrospect, I’d make a few tweaks to that list, but I wouldn’t change our pick of Santana for the top spot.
Details: 7 p.m., Oct. 11, Shoreline Amphitheatre, 1 Amphitheatre Pkwy, Mountain View, 7 p.m., Oct. 12, Sleep Train Pavilion, 2000 Kirker Pass Road, Concord, $25-$75, 925-685-TIXS, 415-421-TIXS, 510-625-TIXS, www.livenation.com.

Heavy Metal

2, MetalFest
Bands4Bands is hosting a great lineup of local bands, including Kaos, Age of Aggression, Thread, In the Absense, Mudsoc, God’s Outlaw, VX36 and Mother Climax. It’s a canned food drive, boasting the clever slogan: “Bring a Metal Can and See Your Fav Metal Band.”
1 p.m. Oct. 11, Memorial Pa
