It’s pretty hard to top the Roots in concert.
Erykah Badu found that out the hard way on Sunday night (June 8th) at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. It wasn’t that the headliner’s set was terrible; it’s more that her offering felt anticlimactic following what was turned in earlier in the night by the Roots.
To be [...]

Nelly
The scene was striking in its incongruity.
There was Nelly, the St. Louis rapper who was then dominating all competition on the charts, standing onstage at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View back in 2002. It was, in many regards, Nelly’s year. His sophomore disc, “Nellyville,” had debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and [...]

Nas was wrong.
The rap star, who sparked a major controversy with the title of last year’s “Hip Hop is Dead” CD, would’ve witnessed a music scene that is hardly in need of life support had he ventured out to the Rock the Bells show on Saturday (Aug. 18).
The all-day hip-hop concert drew some 45,000 fans [...]

In a perfect world, all hip-hop acts would be as good in concert as the Roots.
Of course, the world is far from perfect and the vast majority of hip-hop artists are far better in the studio than on the live stage.
That’s why the Roots are so special.
Everything that is frequently missing from hip-hop shows _ [...]

The Roots put out the CD “Game Theory” last year and critics hailed it as one of the best works of the band’s 12-year-plus career. The general public, however, didn’t listen _ figuratively or literally. Despite the positive reviews, the album turned out to be another commercial disappointment in what was truly a bad sales [...]
