Willie Nelson has two of the year’s best records - the solo effort “Moment of Forever” and the collaboration with Wynton Marsalis, “Two Men with the Blues” - yet they haven’t made much of an impact on his live show.
I’m not complaining. The 75-year-old Texan has long been one of the most consistently dependable performers [...]

(In honor of the Plant/Krauss show, Shay Quillen of the Mercury News and I cooked up this cool feature on other odd couples in pop music history:)
While Englishman Robert Plant was finishing his reign with the biggest, baddest rock band on the planet, a preteen Alison Krauss was hitting fiddle contests in Illinois.
Who would have [...]

I’ve just finished listening to the record that will win the 2009 Grammy for best jazz album. That’s a bold prediction, I know, especially since the nominations won’t even be made for another six months or so. Yet, I understand what the Grammy voters look for in an album.
They like cross-genre musical efforts and collaborations [...]

Let’s hear it for the ladies.
In all my years of drawing up records-of-the-year lists, I’ve never seen the X chromosome so well represented as on my tally for 2007. My top 10 includes four female solo artists, two all-gal bands and one female-fronted troupe. If I’d extended my list to include 20 discs, readers would [...]

The conditions were hardly ideal for performing. The temperature was scratching at 100 degrees, although it felt hotter inside the crowded tent, and the dry air was thick with cigarette smoke and dust. Still, Amy Winehouse couldn’t help but beam as she looked out at the huge audience assembled before her.

Willie Nelson and the Fillmore go together like peanut butter pretzels and strawberry-lime Jell-O.
If that doesn’t sound like a tantalizing combo to you then you’re probably not smoking the same stuff that Willie does.
The country crooner’s semi-annual multi-night stand at San Francisco’s most hallowed rock venue has become the stuff of legend over the years. [...]
