Top cheap wines for these troubled economic times

I’m on a cheap, er, affordable wine kick. I found this piece in my Inbox from last month and thoroughly enjoyed reading about other people’s faves under $10, especially since these are not domestic wines. At $6, the Sigura Viudas Cava is a staple of mine. Share yours!

Jessica, I like many in the $10-$15 range. Under $10 I’d go with Estancia Pinot Noir (Monterey County), Meridian Pinot Noir and several of Cameron Hughes’ wines (available exclusively through his website and Costco), many of which are priced in the $9-$10 range. I’ve had some very nice Syrah’s and Cabs priced right at $9.99 from C.H. Another good one is Chalk Creek Cabernet (not to be confused with Chalk Hill, which is even better, but not in this price range. Trader Joe’s was carrying Chalk Creek a couple of months ago.

Concannon Petite Sirahs are almost always on sale for 9.99 at BevMo.
    Awesome bargain!

    For summer whites, I like:
    Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc-Viogner
Beringer Alluvium Blanc (semillon and sauvignon blanc)
    Kim Crawford sauvignon blanc

    For reds:
    Mondavi Napa Valley
    Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot
almost anything from Jumilla and Priorat in Spain

    Matthew,
    What are the prices??
    Thanks
    Jessica

  5. Jessica Yadegaran Says:

Yeah, that Concannon’s a steal. Thanks Brian.

  6. Jessica Yadegaran Says:

Thanks Brian. That PS is a steal.

  7. Jessica Yadegaran Says:

Chip — agreed. Cameron Hughes does a great portfolio, as does Joel Gott.

    Sorry Jessica,
    Here are the prices:

    Pine Ridge 11.99
    Beringer 16.99
    Kim Crawford 12.99
    Mondavi Cabernet 17.99
    Columbia Crest 7.99
Wines from Spain vary, but the Juan Gil Jumilla (mourvedre) is 11.99 or so, and is a good one that is widely available.

    Sure thing!

Thanks for adding the prices, Matthew. Very helpful. It’s amazing how many great wines are available in that $10-$15 range.

Here is a suggestion for a Great Petite Sirah for under $10 bucks…. McMannis from Lodi. I know Lodi has a rather dubious reputation but this wine “Rocks”. Often gos for $7.99 on sale at BevMo. I compare it to Concannon Reserve PS.

  13. Jessica Says:

    Fred,
I love that McManis too. Totally rocks and always makes my list of under $10 wines.

How can this be soooo cheap? Sauvignon Blanc from Trader Joe’s. No it’s not the much noted “Two Buck Chuck”, it’s Jepson Sauvignon Blanc from Mendocino County. Not big on acid but at $2.99 a bottle, it makes a perfect summer quaffing wine. An economic solution for refreshment at BBQ’s, parties, and perhaps even weddings.

  15. Jessica Says:

I haven’t tried that Sauv Blanc but will definitely seek it out now, thanks!

  16. Fred Says:

    Hi Jessica,

I think many of us have been looking for a good Pinot Noir. Even in the “above $20″ category success can be quite sketchy. Now to find one that you won’t have to trade in your Federal Rebate Check for is another story. Under $10 a bottle level has a few “stars” and the one I find most appealing is a full bodied Pinot from Castle Rock (Monterey county designation) bought on sale from Cost Plus at $8.99. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  17. Double D Says:

If you are looking for a great Italian wine try Colosi’s Rosso. It’s 90% Nero D’Avala and 10% Cab. It’s a bargin at $7.99, available at Bev Mo.

  18. Jessica Says:

That is a good one. Thanks.

  19. Bev Says:

I live in Washington and was just visiting my home in SAcrmaento (went to McClatchy). I bought the Jepson Sav Blanc at the Trader Joes on Fulton and wish I’d bought more. It was exellent!
I also love the Siguras Vidas Cave - found it up here about 25 years ago and stll enjoy it. I’ve found three levels of this Sapnish sparkling wine and I enjoy them all.

  20. Jessica Says:

Same here, I’m particularly a fan of the $6 one!
