2006 Bodega Colome Malbec

Every once in a while I taste a wine that can’t wait for my bimonthly Cork of the Week feature or my column or a Food cover story. Nope. You taste some wines and make a dash for the keyboard to share its sensory brilliance or value or unusual character.

In this case, the 2006 Bodega Colome Malbec is on the brain. I cracked this guy open in anticipation of a trip to Mendoza later this year. It’s $20 of gorgeousness: the entry is like mashed fresh figs in a boysenberry sauce and the mid-palate and finish taste like espresso and tar. I had the wine over two nights, once, with an olive and mushroom based pasta and the other night with few pieces of dark chocolate.

Both times I was impressed. The winery imported 2,850 cases of the Malbec. Do yourself a favor and find some. It’s a Hess Collection wine.

Mendoza is great, don’t miss the wine pairing lunch at Ruca Malen. A trip to visit with Carmelo Patti is also well worth the time. Lastly, if it is not too late stay at the Finca Adalgisa if at all possible. Enjoy the trip!

Thanks for the tips. Keep them coming. And any tips you have on Buenos Aires are also much appreciated.
